Eight Races Set For Glorious Goodwood's Opening Day
Rich Prize Money On Sussex Downs Card
Glorious Goodwood's opening day, staged on Tuesday 28 July 2026, carries a combined purse of more than £883,000 (US$1.2 million) across eight races on the Sussex Downs. The Gr.1 Goodwood Cup Stakes headlines the card with a return meeting between Trawlerman and Scandinavia, while the Gr.2 Vintage Stakes and the Gr.2 Lennox Stakes complete a trio of races that carry black type — the notation used to record a horse's most valuable form for breeding purposes. Four handicaps and a juvenile maiden complete the eight-race card.
Trawlerman Faces Goodwood Cup Test
John and Thady Gosden train Trawlerman, an eight-year-old owned by Godolphin who carries course-and-distance form into the meeting. Aidan O'Brien trains Scandinavia, a four-year-old raced by Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Mrs John Magnier, who arrives off victory in the Gr.1 Ascot Gold Cup. O'Brien also saddles stablemate Illinois,Illinois And Scandinavia having both been left in contention for The Goodwood Cup since entries closed. Roger Varian's Rahiebb finished eighth in that race and is also declared, while Charlie Johnston's Lazy Griff, a winner at Sandown over the trip, is among the confirmed runners. Sir Mark Prescott's Consent is the only filly in the field.
The Gr.1 Goodwood Cup Stakes is run over two miles at Goodwood, worth £283,550 (US$379,957) to the winning connections from a field of 14 confirmed runners including Trawlerman, Scandinavia, Illinois, Rahiebb and Consent.
Al Hudaiba Puts Record On The Line
Charlie Appleby trains Al Hudaiba for Godolphin, unbeaten in three completed starts, having beaten Aidan O'Brien's Abraham Lincoln in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket. William Buick rides the grey colt over seven furlongs. O'Brien saddles Haffner instead in this race, while Oliver Cole's unbeaten Dr Rascal, ridden by Kaiya Fraser, and Richard Hannon's Cut A Dash are also entered. Joseph Patrick O'Brien's Ruler's Control, Charlie Johnston's Pikachu and Ralph Beckett's Undiscovered complete a field of nine two-year-olds contesting the extended trip for the first time.
The Gr.2 Vintage Stakes is run over seven furlongs at Goodwood, worth £113,420 (US$151,983) to the winner, with Al Hudaiba, Haffner, Dr Rascal, Cut A Dash and Undiscovered among the nine confirmed two-year-olds.
Zavateri Returns For Lennox Test
Zavateri, a Group One winner as a juvenile in 2025, returns from an absence stretching back to a fourth-place finish in the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes when Eve Johnson Houghton saddles him in the Gr.2 Lennox Stakes. "He's got one more good bit of work to do and then we'll be ready to rock and roll," Johnson Houghton said. William Haggas's Lake Forest carries the field's highest rating, and Ralph Beckett's Qirat, winner of last year's Sussex Stakes, arrives off victory in the Criterion Stakes at York. Andrew Balding saddles Never So Brave and Flora Of Bermuda, Wathnan Racing's Royal Ascot acquisition last season , among a field of 16.

K R Burke trains Liberty Lane, ridden by Clifford Lee, who carries the field's top rating of 109 in the Class 2 Chesterfield Cup Handicap after finishing runner-up last time out. Take Heart, trained by Johnny Murtagh, won last year's renewal of the race. Jack Morland's Bolster and John and Thady Gosden's Torito, both course specialists, are declared alongside William Haggas's Crown Of Oaks. James Owen's Asmen Warrior arrives on a two-race winning run, while Hamad Al Jehani's Quai De Bethune, ridden by James Doyle for Wathnan Racing, is also among the confirmed runners.
