Gerringong Takes On Linebacker In Silver Eagle Showdown
Mare Seeks Breakthrough Against Guineas Winner On Everest Day
Gerringong, the lightly-raced mare trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, will attempt to upset the formbook when she takes on Randwick Guineas winner Linebacker in the Gr.3 Silver Eagle at Royal Randwick on Saturday. The 4YO mare, who has collected four stakes placings from just nine career starts, comes into the A$1 million (USD 650,000) contest following a narrow second to Manaal in the Gr.2 Golden Pendant whilst Linebacker, prepared by John O'Shea and Tom Charlton, returns to form after claiming the Randwick Guineas in the autumn.
The 1300-metre feature, which takes place on the glittering Everest Day card, offers the winner and placegetters automatic entry into the A$10 million (USD 6.5 million) Golden Eagle at Randwick on November 1. Recent form from the race has proven formidable, with last year's third-placed finisher War Machine claiming Brisbane's Gr.1 Stradbroke Handicap this winter, whilst 2023 runner-up Pericles has collected multiple Group One placings including seconds in the Futurity Stakes and Doncaster Mile.
The 2023 Silver Eagle form was firmly franked by the third-placed Pericles who ran second next-up in the Golden Eagle quinella before a host of subsequent Group One placings including the 2024 Futurity Stakes, 2024 Doncaster Mile and 2024 Underwood Stakes. The 2021 Silver Eagle form was franked with the third placegetter Count De Rupee running second next-up in that year's Golden Eagle results before his victory at Kembla Grange.
Clark Banking On Tactical Advantages For Connection
Jockey Tim Clark, who partnered Gerringong when beaten less than a length by Manaal in the Gr.2 Golden Pendant, believes Saturday's assignment will prove crucial in determining the mare's path through the remainder of the spring carnival. With connections weighing up options including the Golden Eagle over 1500 metres and The Invitation at 1400 metres, Clark is confident the mare has thrived since returning from a Victorian campaign.
"She'd just come back from Melbourne the other day. She looks like she has really blossomed in the past few weeks back in Sydney and I think she will go a lot better this weekend," Clark said during the week. "She would need to do something pretty special on Saturday to put her hand up but I'm not saying she isn't capable of doing that. Hopefully she can put her hand up for a Golden Eagle berth, or there is The Invitation as well."
Drawing the coveted inside barrier whilst carrying just 54 kilograms, Gerringong holds a significant 4.5-kilogram weight advantage over topweight Linebacker, who has been allocated 58.5 kilograms from the awkward barrier 12. Clark acknowledges the New Zealand-bred gelding as "the class runner" and "the main rival" but believes his mare's on-pace racing style could prove decisive in determining whether she warrants a start in the A$10 million Golden Eagle.
"We've got that weight advantage and tactically, we might have a slight advantage as far as position in the run goes," Clark explained. "She is knocking on the door, she is lightly raced, and she is a talented mare in her own right. Hopefully she can knock one of these races over soon. She's due."
Guineas Winner Faces Wide Draw Challenge Under Top Weight
Rated 106, Linebacker stands as the most expected horse in the 13-runner field but faces a significant tactical puzzle from his wide starting position. The gelding returned from a five-month spell with a seventh-place finish in the Gr.2 Tramway Stakes over 1400 metres, finishing three and a half lengths behind Pericles whilst carrying 58 kilograms. That effort marked his first appearance since a disappointing autumn campaign that yielded just one placing from four attempts following his Randwick Guineas triumph.
With 42 days between runs, Linebacker strips fitter for his second-up assignment over a distance at which he has previously tasted success. However, the combination of top weight and the widest barrier presents a formidable challenge against a mare who will likely be able to dictate terms from the front. Jockey Zac Lloyd must produce a masterful ride to position the gelding effectively from the outside alley whilst conceding such significant weight to the main danger.
Clark acknowledged Linebacker as the measuring stick in assessing Gerringong's suitability to press onto the A$10 million Golden Eagle showpiece. The gelding represents the class runner of the Silver Eagle field, though must overcome the significant handicap of barrier and weight.
Strong Support Cast Features Interstate And Local Contenders
Spicy Martini, trained by Toby Edmonds, brings the equal-highest rating among the mares at 97 following her victory in the Gr.3 Fred Best Classic in June. The Queensland-trained 4YO resumed with a sixth in the Gr.2 Sheraco Stakes over 1200 metres at Rosehill, finishing four lengths from Manaal in testing conditions. Second-up historically represents a productive strike zone for the mare, whilst the step up to 1300 metres should prove suitable. Champion jockey Craig Williams takes the mount from barrier 10, carrying 54.5 kilograms.
Depth Of Character, prepared by Annabel and Rob Archibald, brings inconsistent form into the contest. Rated 96, the gelding finished third in the Gr.3 Bill Ritchie Stakes over 1400 metres before struggling home last of 12 in the Gr.1 Epsom Handicap whilst carrying just 50 kilograms. The Bill Ritchie form, where he finished one and three-quarter lengths behind With Your Blessing, carries some merit, though dropping back from 1600 metres to 1300 metres may not prove ideal. Jockey Jason Collett takes the ride from barrier eight carrying 57.5 kilograms.
Bjorn Baker represents the largest single-stable presence with four runners spanning the field. Mayfair resumes from a three-month break having finished his last campaign with a narrow second in the Listed Quality over 1110 metres at Doomben in May. The gelding has been readied with two solid trials, including a Randwick hit-out on October 7, and draws favourably in barrier two carrying 56 kilograms under Josh Parr.
Imperial Force struggled badly when resuming, finishing second-last at Warwick Farm carrying 58 kilograms, though drops back to 56 kilograms here from barrier seven with Zac Purton engaged. Raikkonen ran ninth first-up and reportedly can improve sharply but requires luck in running from barrier 11 under Chad Schofield, whilst Point And Shoot appears outclassed after running last in his past two starts. Point And Shoot carries 56 kilograms from barrier six under Rachel King.
Lord Penman, trained by Chris Waller, finished seventh in the Epsom Handicap carrying 50.5 kilograms before that ran seventh in a Benchmark 88 contest at Randwick carrying 59 kilograms. The booking of James McDonald proves significant and suggests Waller believes improvement is forthcoming. Carrying 56 kilograms from barrier nine, the New Zealand-bred gelding has the weight and position to prove competitive if rediscovering better form.
Sabaj, trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr, brings Victorian form having resumed from a spell. The gelding finished second in the Gr.2 Robert Sangster Stakes in April and has been readied with three solid jump-outs. Damian Lane takes the mount from barrier three carrying 56 kilograms, though faces a significant fresh assignment against proven Sydney form.
Snow In May, also prepared by John O'Shea and Tom Charlton, races well this campaign having finished third in the Gr.3 Mona Lisa Stakes fresh before running fourth in the Golden Pendant behind Gerringong. Third-up from the outside barrier 13, the mare carries 54 kilograms under Dylan Gibbons but must overcome the widest starting position.
Shangri La Spring, also trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, returns second-up following a disappointing seventh fresh. Drawing barrier four under Adam Hyeronimus carrying 56.5 kilograms, the horse appears to face a stern examination against this quality field.
Harlem Queen, prepared by Nathan Doyle, resumes from a spell having finished eleventh in the Listed Princess Stakes at Eagle Farm in April. Drawing barrier five under Tommy Berry carrying 54 kilograms, the mare represents an outsider but could prove competitive if the pace proves excessive.
The Silver Eagle has rapidly established itself as a significant form reference on the Sydney Spring Racing Calendar. The race, which gained Group Three status for the first time in 2024, was won by Ostraka last year, whilst Vienna Princess claimed a surprise victory in 2023. Previous winners Vilana, Aim, Flit and The Inevitable have all gone on to further stakes success, cementing the race's reputation as a genuine pointer to future quality.
The contest shapes as a fascinating tactical battle between Gerringong's inside draw and light weight against Linebacker's superior class credentials and proven Group One success.
