Kalpana Faces Minnie Hauk In York's Yorkshire Oaks
Balding's Filly Eyes Second Group One
Kalpana headlines a 15-strong field for the Gr.1 Yorkshire Oaks at York Racecourse on 20 August 2026, meeting defending champion Minnie Hauk as she bids to add to her 26 July 2026 Gr.1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes success. Trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by Colin Keane, Kalpana arrives on the second day of the Ebor Festival, 24 hours after Ombudsman and Constitution River contest the Gr.1 Juddmonte International Stakes at the same meeting. In beating Calandagan by a length and a half, this season's Irish Derby winner Benvenuto Cellini, last year's dual Derby hero Lambourn and a previous King George winner in Goliath at Ascot, Kalpana strengthened her claim as one of the leading middle-distance fillies and mares in training anywhere in the world.
The Gr.1 Yorkshire Oaks is a Group One, Class 1 contest for 3YO+ fillies and mares, run over 1m 3f 188y on turf at York with the going described as good, off at 18:35 GST (15:35 BST) and worth £600,000 (US$798,000) guaranteed with the winner collecting £340,260 (US$452,546), the runner-up £129,000 (US$171,570) and the third-placed finisher £64,560 (US$85,865), and Kalpana, Minnie Hauk, Johanna Walsh and Tattycoram head a field capped at a safety limit of 20 runners.
Andrew Balding struck a measured tone before confirming Kalpana's participation. “I'm very pleased with how she's moving and how her appetite has been since Ascot,” he said. “She's got a big piece of work to do prior to confirming that we're going to York. But, as long as that goes well, we're really looking forward to it.”
Minnie Hauk arrives with the form book working against her, having finished a well-beaten eighth back at Ascot in the Gr.1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes since her Yorkshire Oaks triumph 12 months ago. That victory, by three and a half lengths from Estrange with stablemate Garden Of Eden third, gave Aidan P. O'Brien a record-equalling ninth win in the race, and Minnie Hauk now returns to York looking to defend the title successfully for the first time in her career, 12 months on from that decisive Ebor Festival success.
O'Brien saddles seven of the 15 runners, a number that includes Amelia Earhart, Beautify, Composing, Diamond Necklace, Moments Of Joy and Sugar Island alongside Minnie Hauk, giving Ballydoyle by far the biggest hand in the finish. Diamond Necklace's participation on the day itself was not settled beyond doubt in pre-race reporting. Sugar Island, the three-year-old among that septet, gives Ballydoyle a second interest in the generational battle alongside Johanna Walsh and Inis Mor, even if the market expects Minnie Hauk to carry the stable's leading hopes.
Irish Oaks Form Fuels Younger Rivals
Johanna Walsh, trained by Joseph Patrick O'Brien and ridden by Dylan Browne McMonagle, arrives fresh from victory in the Gr.1 Irish Oaks and rates the best of the current Classic crop, representing the leading 3YO challenge to the older pair. She races from stall 11, with fellow Irish Oaks form-holder Inis Mor, beaten four lengths into second in that race for trainer David Menuisier, drawn in stall 10 under Oisin Murphy.
3YO fillies have won the Yorkshire Oaks in each of the last three runnings and 17 times in total since 2000, a record that lends weight to the claims of Johanna Walsh and Inis Mor against the older generation. Tattycoram, trained by Ralph Beckett and ridden by Edward Greatrex, breaks from stall four as another leading contender among the four-year-olds alongside Minnie Hauk and Moody, backed by a wide-margin Group Two victory over the consistent Tiffany last time out.
Moody, trained by Paddy Twomey, arrives unbeaten in her last four starts, including a Group Three win from the front at the Curragh under Billy Lee, and represents the strongest challenge to Kalpana from outside the O'Brien and Beckett camps. Her improvement through the summer has been marked, though she steps up sharply in grade against established Group One performers over this longer trip.
Yorkshire Oaks Tests The Generations
The remainder of the field is made up of Legacy Link for John & Thady Gosden, Earth Shot for William Haggas and Sparan Nua for Jim Bolger, each holding solid form claims. Legacy Link won the Gr.3 Musidora Stakes at York in May and was only denied by Thundering On in the Gr.1 Epsom Oaks, though she flopped when running back quickly in the Gr.2 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot and needs to bounce back. Earth Shot beat Johanna Walsh in that same Ribblesdale Stakes but managed only sixth behind the same rival in the Irish Oaks, while Sparan Nua finished third to Johanna Walsh at the Curragh. Legacy Link and Earth Shot both arrive without a Group One placing to their name in 2026, leaving the bulk of pre-race attention on the O'Brien-trained group and the established older mares.
The Yorkshire Oaks carries added significance beyond its own prize money as a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series Win and You're In event, a scheme guaranteeing its winner a start in the Breeders' Cup itself without further qualification, in this case paid entry into the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
