Eight Confirmed For Whitney Stakes

Magnitude and Sovereignty meet again in Saturday's Gr.1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, renewing a meeting from the Gr.1 Stephen Foster Stakes on 27 June. Winchell Thoroughbreds' Magnitude , trained by Steve Asmussen, beat Godolphin's Sovereignty, trained by Bill Mott, by 5¼ lengths in that Churchill Downs renewal, and the pair line up again over the same trip. Sovereignty beat Magnitude by 20¾ lengths in their only previous meeting at Saratoga, last year's Travers Stakes.

The Gr.1 Whitney Stakes carries a US$1,000,000 purse over 1m 1f (9 furlongs) on the Saratoga dirt on 8 August 2026, open to horses aged three and up, and serves as a Win and You're In qualifier for the US$7,000,000 Gr.1 Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on 31 October. Six of the eight runners have won at Gr.1 level, with the field carrying combined career earnings of more than US$32,790,000.

The field is headed by Magnitude for Steve Asmussen and Jose Ortiz, and includes Sovereignty for Bill Mott and Junior Alvarado, Nitrogen for Mark Casse and John Velazquez, Baeza for Bill Mott and Flavien Prat, White Abarrio for Saffie Joseph Jr and Irad Ortiz Jr, Antiquarian for Todd Pletcher and Manny Franco, Forged Steel for Saffie Joseph Jr and Micah Husbands, and Tiztastic for Steve Asmussen and Tyler Gaffalione.

Three of the eight runners carry recognised early speed: Magnitude breaks from post one, Nitrogen from post two and Forged Steel from post four. Forged Steel is partly owned by C Two Racing Stable, which also holds a share in stablemate White Abarrio, breaking from post five.

The 4YO son of Not This Time has won four consecutive starts since finishing runner-up in last year's Gr.1 Pennsylvania Derby, a run that included his win in the Dubai World Cup at Meydan in March, when he denied Japan's Forever Young in the world's richest dirt race. Asmussen, who won this race with Horse of the Year Gun Runner in 2017, compared the pair directly. “The parallels with Gun Runner are pretty striking,” he said. “Ever since Gun Runner, we've been trying to come up with another one and it certainly looks like he's done a pretty good job of doing that up to this point.”

Godolphin's homebred Sovereignty missed the Gr.1 Breeders' Cup Classic through illness after his Triple Crown-winning three-year-old season but was still named Horse of the Year, and returned to face White Abarrio in the Gr.2 Oaklawn Handicap in April before finishing third in the Foster, beaten by Magnitude and Baeza. Mott, who also saddles Baeza, addressed the run directly. “I have no other excuses. I thought he went into the race fine,” he said. “He seems to be training forwardly. I have no reservations about the way he's training.”

Nitrogen Chases History In Whitney

Nitrogen, the reigning champion 3YO filly, is unbeaten in three starts on the Saratoga dirt and arrives on the back of a 12¾-length win in the Gr.1 Ogden Phipps Stakes in June. The Medaglia d'Oro filly would become the first female winner of the Whitney since Personal Ensign in 1988 were she to prevail.

Trainer Mark Casse said: “She's doing tremendous. She's gotten bigger and stronger and she's ready. If we were going to try colts, this is the place. She loves it here. But it will not be easy. This is as good of a Whitney as you'll ever see.” John Velazquez takes the ride in place of Jose Ortiz, who partners Magnitude instead, while owner D. J. Stable's racing manager Jonathan Green said: “This is such an outstanding field, the winner will have to run their A-game. A so-so effort will not get it done in this field.”

Baeza And White Abarrio Complete Field

Baeza, runner-up to Magnitude in the Foster, has finished second, third or fourth in five of his last six starts and remains without a Gr.1 win since last year's Pennsylvania Derby. Mott took over the CRK Stable and Grandview Equine colt's training after John Shirreffs died in February and reports him working well. White Abarrio, the 2023 Whitney winner for a different training operation, arrives for Saffie Joseph Jr having finished fourth in the Foster, but with a Gr.2 Oaklawn Handicap victory over Sovereignty in April to his name.

Trainer Todd Pletcher's Antiquarian, last year's Gr.1 Jockey Club Gold Cup winner at this track, and the front-running Forged Steel, campaigning for the same ownership group as White Abarrio, complete a field that also includes Tiztastic under new rider Tyler Gaffalione. The son of Tiz the Law won last year's Gr.2 Louisiana Derby on the Kentucky Derby trail before finishing third in last month's Suburban Stakes.

The Whitney's winner earns an automatic route into the Gr.1 Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on 31 October. Nitrogen bids to become the first filly to win the race since Personal Ensign in 1988, taking on six fellow Gr.1 winners across the eight-strong field assembled for Saturday's US$1,000,000 feature.

The Whitney sits on the GCC feeder tracker as a declared pipeline race, with its Breeders' Cup Classic qualifiers feeding through to the Dubai World Cup at Meydan. The pipeline has direct resonance here: Magnitude already holds this year's Dubai World Cup, having denied Japan's Forever Young at Meydan in March, giving Saturday's renewal a bearing on his path back to Meydan for a title defence.
