World Stars Clash In Meydan Turf Showdown

Ombudsman, the brilliant 5YO Night of Thunder gelding trained by John & Thady Gosden and ridden by William Buick from draw seven, will once again face old foe Facteur Cheval, trained by Jerome Reynier and partnered by Mickael Barzalona from draw six, in the US$5,000,000 Group One Dubai Turf over 1,800 metres at Meydan on Dubai World Cup night. Ombudsman, carrying the highest rating in the field on a mark of 128 and a dual Group One winner in Britain last season, has already accounted for the Reynier-trained Ribchester gelding by 8¼ lengths when these two rivals met in the previous renewal of this contest.

Facteur Cheval, who memorably won this race by a short head from Namur, bids to become the first horse to win the Dubai Turf on more than one occasion, arriving seeking to reverse a heavy defeat at the hands of the same rival twelve months ago.

Brilliant Ombudsman Arrives On Dominant European Form

Ombudsman has been one of the most consistent and impressive middle-distance performers in Europe across the past two seasons, winning six of his nine career turf starts for the Gosden yard. The 5YO delivered an outstanding campaign in 2025, opening his account with a convincing 2-length success over Anmaat in the Gr.1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot before producing a dominant 3½-length triumph over Delacroix in the Gr.1 International Stakes at York. He signed off his European season finishing second behind Calandagan in the Gr.1 Champion Stakes at Ascot, going down by 2¼ lengths in a performance further confirming his standing among the very best milers in training.

Drawing stall seven, Buick’s mount arrives having competed almost exclusively over distances between 1,600 and 2,000 metres throughout his career, making this 1,800-metre assignment a natural fit.

Facteur Cheval Bids To Reclaim Lost Crown

Having etched his name into Dubai racing history with that breathtaking short-head victory from Namur in the previous renewal, Facteur Cheval arrives seeking redemption after a difficult twelve months. The 7YO Ribchester gelding struggled on subsequent outings, finishing seventh and beaten 15½ lengths behind Forever Young in a Group One at King Abdulaziz Racecourse, before running a laboured race in the previous edition of this contest when beaten 8¼ lengths by Ombudsman himself.

However, Reynier’s durable grey showed more encouraging signs when finishing runner-up behind Royal Champion in a Gr.1 at King Abdulaziz Racecourse, going down by 4¾ lengths in a performance suggesting there may still be life in his campaign. A return to Meydan, where he first demonstrated his brilliance, gives the former champion every opportunity to produce a far more competitive showing.

Japanese Raider And Local Challengers Seek Upset

Gaia Force, the 7YO Kitasan Black grey trained by Haruki Sugiyama and partnered by Ryusei Sakai from draw 11, brings a formidable Japanese miling profile to proceedings. Running in blinkers, the grey gelding won a Group Two at Tokyo before finishing second to Jantar Mantar in the Group One Mile Championship at Kyoto, beaten by 1¾ lengths.

He also finished fourth in a Group One at Tokyo, going down by just 1½ lengths to Romantic Warrior, whose time of 1 minute 45.10 seconds over this course stands as the Meydan track record. While his international performances have been mixed, Sugiyama’s grey carries solid credentials at this trip.

Quddwah, the 6YO Kingman gelding trained by Simon & Ed Crisford and ridden by Cristian Demuro from draw one, arrives as one of the most in-form horses on the entire Carnival circuit. Having landed a Group Two at Meydan by 1¼ lengths from Aomori City, the Crisfords’ charge bounced back from a narrow reverse to win another Group Two in February, beating Dividend by 2½ lengths. Drawn on the inside rail, the step up to Group One level will reveal precisely how good this consistent 6YO really is.

Elnajmm, the 6YO Sea The Stars gelding trained by Michael Costa and ridden by Ray Dawson from draw 10, has been among the most improved performers on the Carnival circuit. Having landed a Group Two at Meydan by a short head from Chicago Critic, Costa’s gelding then won a Group Three at Meydan, beating Mysterious Night by 2¾ lengths, and makes his first Group One appearance here as a progressive type with more improvement to come.

A Competitive Supporting Cast Rounds Off Field

Make Me King, the 6YO Dark Angel grey trained by Hamad Al Jehani and ridden by James Doyle from draw four, arrives on the back of a Listed success in Doha, having also placed in Listed and Group events at Meydan and Abu Dhabi throughout the season, underlining his consistency at this level. Fort George, the 4YO Territories gelding trained by Ed Walker and ridden by Kieran Shoemark from draw nine, has made rapid progress this winter, winning a Group Three at Meydan by a nose from Arabian Light before filling second in a Group Two, beaten 1¾ lengths by Rebel’s Romance, and arrives in excellent heart.

Dividend, the 4YO Kodiac gelding trained by Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole and partnered by Rossa Ryan from draw two, wears cheek pieces and arrives after back-to-back Carnival handicap victories before finishing runner-up behind Quddwah in a Group Two, beaten 2½ lengths. Andreas Vesalius, the 7YO Caravaggio grey trained by Ahmad bin Harmash and ridden by Connor Beasley from draw eight, wears a tongue tie and has placed consistently throughout the season, finishing third in a Group Three at Meydan behind Elnajmm, beaten 2¾ lengths.

Folk Festival, the 5YO Blue Point gelding trained by Salem bin Ghadayer and partnered by Bernardo Pinheiro from draw five, earns his first Group One opportunity after landing a Carnival handicap in January, while Tumbler, the 7YO Kingman gelding trained by Nicolas Caullery and ridden by Stephane Pasquier from draw three, carries a hood and brings French Group Three experience but faces a stiff task finding the level required in a race of this quality.
