Murphy and Michael Scofield Deny Final Destination
A commanding front-running display under Oisin Murphy delivered the US$1,000,000 (SAR3.75 million) Tuwaiq Cup (Listed) for Michael Scofield on the opening afternoon of the 2026 Saudi Cup meeting at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh on Saturday. The 4YO gelding, representing the powerful White Stable of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Sons, repelled the late challenge of Final Destination to score by three-quarters of a length in a time of 1:52.668 over 1800 metres on the dirt.
Trained by Saad Aljenade, Michael Scofield had entered the race off the back of a disappointing seventh-place finish over course and distance in January. Yet the son of Tiz The Law showed significant improvement under the guidance of Murphy, the five-time British champion jockey whose booking had signalled the esteem in which connections held this colt heading into the biggest race of his career.
Bred by the China Horse Club and a half-brother to the Grade One-winning Kimari, Michael Scofield has always carried a distinguished pedigree, and this Listed triumph represented a career-best effort that vindicated the decision to aim him at this valuable prize.
A Dominant Display on the Dirt
Murphy, who had previously tasted success in Saudi Arabia aboard Byzantine Dream in the Red Sea Turf Handicap during the 2025 Saudi Cup meeting, judged the pace superbly from the front. He allowed Michael Scofield to bowl along through measured fractions before kicking clear entering the straight. The gelding responded gamely when pressure arrived from behind, holding off the staying-on Final Destination with authority.
The runner-up, a 6YO trained by Abdullah Alsidrani and ridden by Ricardo Ferreira, ran a fine race in defeat to collect US$200,000. Owned by Sheikh Abdullah Homoud Almalek Alsabah, Final Destination had been one of the outsiders in the field but proved his mettle with a strong-finishing effort that suggested he is capable of further success at this level. Third-placed Waqtuk, the Hesham Abdulwahed-trained 5YO, ran on steadily under Alexis Moreno to collect US$150,000, finishing a length behind the runner-up.
Scotland Yard Dethroned as White Stable Celebrates
Notably absent from the reckoning was last year's impressive Tuwaiq Cup hero Scotland Yard, the Nicolas Bachalard-trained gelding who had stormed to victory by nearly six lengths in the 2025 renewal under champion jockey Adel Alfouraidi. Scotland Yard had been among the fancied runners once more, but could make no impression on the day, leaving Aljenade's charge to seize the crown for the White Stable.
The victory was particularly significant for Aljenade, who also saddles runners across several other races on the Saudi Cup card, including Star Of Wonder in the Gr.1 Saudi Cup itself. The trainer's domestic programme has been geared towards this weekend, and Michael Scofield's success provided the perfect start. Pre-race analysis from Racing Ahead Magazine had identified the gelding as a danger, noting that Murphy's involvement suggested the horse was held in high regard by connections despite his recent underwhelming effort.
For Murphy, the Tuwaiq Cup victory added another prestigious winner to an already glittering Saudi Arabia record and provided ideal momentum ahead of his later engagement aboard Sunrise Zipangu in the Gr.1 Saudi Cup. The Irishman's ability to dictate the tempo and produce a well-timed acceleration proved the difference in a competitive 18-runner field contesting one of the most valuable listed races on the international calendar.
