Ombudsman Takes Over Wednesday At Royal Ascot 2026
Royal Ascot 2026’s Wednesday will be remembered for what Ombudsman confirmed rather than for what he won. Godolphin always expected their stable star to defend the Gr.1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes competitively. How comprehensively he would do it was the real question, and Ombudsman’s four-length defeat of Minnie Hauk supplied an answer that outlasts the afternoon itself. He became only the fourth horse to complete back-to-back victories in the race (The full list: Connaught in 1969 and 1970, Mtoto in 1987 and 1988, and Muhtarram, trained by John Gosden himself, in 1994 and 1995). William Buick called the performance one of the rare ones, the sort a jockey feels rather than rides, and there was little in the closing stages to argue otherwise.
For Godolphin, the result does more than extend a winning sequence. It hands Buick and the Gosden team a horse capable of carrying their colours through the Juddmonte International and into the King George conversation, at a point in the season when Godolphin’s younger generation is still finding its level. Wednesday’s card went on to produce six more results, each with its own claim on the day, but none will be discussed in Dubai or Doha with quite the same certainty in twelve months’ time.
Where The Other Six Races Landed
Kensington Palace Stakes- Alobayyah gave William Haggas a striking placings sweep, with stable companions Seren Star and Rhapsody following her home in third and fourth. Tom Marquand’s filly settled a frustrating route back to the track after a setback last season, and the Newmarket yard left the rest of the field with little to fight over. None of Godolphin, Wathnan or Shadwell saddled a runner, the only race of the seven to pass without Gulf interest.
Windsor Castle Stakes- King Of Cloughan asserted late under a patient Billy Loughnane to deny his market rivals, justifying trainer Joseph O’Brien’s third winner of the week. Moonrise chased home for Andrew Balding, with Harlequin Sky completing the frame. Wednesday’s other juvenile contest passed, like the one before it, without a Godolphin, Wathnan or Shadwell representative among the principals.
Queen Mary Stakes- Victorious settled the opening sprint for connections including Sue Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, with Ryan Moore producing the daughter of Wootton Bassett to beat Senorita Bonita by two lengths despite sight in only one eye. American raider Ruiva chased home for Wesley Ward. Coolmore’s depth at this fixture left no room for Gulf interest in the placings, a pattern Wednesday would not entirely repeat.
Royal Hunt Cup- Rogue Diplomat handed James Owen and Harry Davies a first Royal Ascot winner apiece in the meeting’s biggest cavalry charge, but the placing of most interest to Gulf readers came one length back. Blue RC, carrying the colours of Sheikh Juma Dalmook Al Maktoum, ran on for second under Hector Crouch, a result that will not trouble the meeting’s main Gulf ledger but belongs in its margins.
Duke of Cambridge Stakes- Blue Bolt eased to a near two-length success for Andrew Balding, with trainer and jockey Colin Keane both pointing the filly towards a Group One target later in the summer, most likely the Falmouth. Jancis chased home for Willie McCreery, with John Gosden’s Friendly Soul, hampered at the start, finishing best of those behind. No Gulf-owned runner featured in this one.
Queen’s Vase- Limestone provided the afternoon’s sharpest Gulf moment outside the feature, a partnership including Al Shaqab Racing denying Godolphin’s Del Maro by a nose in a driving finish for trainer Joseph O’Brien and jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle. Charlie Appleby, accepting defeat with good grace, called Del Maro a future St Leger type rather than dwelling on the nose that beat him. Ranga Tang completed the frame.

Setting The Gulf Ledger From Royal Ascot 2026’s Card
The Gulf ledger for Wednesday reads cleanly. Godolphin finished two from two, Ombudsman winning the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and Del Maro chasing home Limestone in the Queen’s Vase. Wathnan Racing saddled no runners on the day, its meeting total holding at nine runners for one winner and one third managed on Tuesday at the Coventry Stakes and the Wolferton Stakes. Shadwell remained without a runner through two days of the meeting.
Outside the three core operations, Al Shaqab Racing had a hand in Wednesday’s first winner through Limestone, and Sheikh Juma Dalmook Al Maktoum collected a second placing with Blue RC in the Royal Hunt Cup.
