A Trip He Had Never Been Asked To Run

"When he quickens on quick ground he has a devastating turn of foot," Charlie Appleby said, moments after York had delivered the result its softening ground had threatened to deny him. Ridden by William Buick, Notable Speech justified that faith in the Gr.1 City Of York Stakes 2026 renewal at York Racecourse on 22 August 2026, drawing clear inside the final furlong to win over seven furlongs for the first time at the top level.

Only the second running since its promotion to Group One status, the City Of York Stakes closed the Ebor Festival on ground that had eased to good to soft during the week, a shift connections had worried about before the off.

The Gr.1 City Of York Stakes was run over seven furlongs at York Racecourse, where Notable Speech, a 5YO entire trained by Charlie Appleby for Godolphin and ridden by William Buick, beat Lake Forest by 2¾ lengths in a time of 1m 24.91s on good to soft going. Lake Forest closed fastest of the placed trio to snatch second by a short head from Marvelman, who had set the pace throughout. 14 runners went to post, every one of them rated at least 110, and the win was Notable Speech's ninth of his career and sixth at Group One level, taking his earnings past US$4.0 million (£3 million).

The victory arrived weeks after a rare below-par effort in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, on ground closer to quick than he ideally wants, and followed five previous Group One wins that had all come over a mile on good ground or faster, the 2,000 Guineas and Sussex Stakes in 2024, the Woodbine Mile and Breeders' Cup Mile in 2025, and the Lockinge Stakes in May 2026. A seven-furlong success on softened ground answered a question that had trailed him through a season already built on durability, in the final year of a career that ends at stud.

Buick Rides Him Fresh Off The Rail

Appleby had sent his stable's leading miler into the race with genuine reservations about the ground, and turned to a tactical change to get the job done. "We came here feeling that he was in great order, but we were concerned about the ground," he said. "We rode him differently and I told William to be slightly more positive than normal, to try and keep him travelling for as long as possible before seeing whether he would allow himself to quicken." He added that he had been pleased to see the field come over to the stands' rail, calling it "a fresher strip of ground."

William Buick settled Notable Speech closer to the pace than usual, tracking Marvelman up the inside rail before the pair angled across to the fresher stands-side strip early in the straight, where Marvelman continued to lead until Notable Speech went past him approaching the final furlong. "The ground was a definite worry and I thought Charlie was very brave to run Notable Speech," the jockey said. "He had the faith and the confidence in the horse, who showed his class. I think it was very important to try and get over as far as we could towards the stands side because the ground is a little fresher there." Buick added, "He's a great horse and a super miler. We always thought he had enough speed for six furlongs and now he's won over seven here. Credit to everyone at home and Charlie because it's a great training performance."

William Haggas, whose Lake Forest closed fastest of the placed trio without ever threatening the winner, read the form through the ground rather than the margin. "The winner is a good horse and that's probably his best trip," Haggas said. "He was very good today, but we stuck on well on ground that maybe wasn't ideal for him." He left open a possible follow-up target for the runner-up. "We'd certainly look at the Breeders' Cup Mile, but Notable Speech has been there and done it. You need to jump out of the stalls properly in America, so we'll see."

Andrew Balding, whose Marvelman set every yard of the pace before being worn down and edged out of second by a short head, took the placing as confirmation rather than disappointment. "We've always had a lot of belief in him and we've just been waiting for this little bit of give in the ground," Balding said. "I'm sure there's a big race in him at some stage." The Sprint Cup at Haydock, the Park Stakes at Doncaster and the Prix de la Foret were mentioned as possible next targets for Marvelman.

Buick placed the afternoon in a wider context than one horse's record. "We all know it's something we needed," he said. "This race has been well supported and a horse like him doing it today is a big kudos to the race. Hopefully it shows what sort of horse you need to win it."

City Of York Stakes 2026 Opens A Door

Appleby framed the run as proof of range rather than a one-off, and pointed the credit beyond his own yard. "He has shown his versatility on trip and ground today, which gives us the confidence heading back to the Breeders' Cup," he said. "We are allowed to give these horses the opportunity to do it, and that is full credit to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and Team Godolphin for letting us keep these horses in training, as it would be very easy to retire a horse like him."

Appleby also pointed to the sprint route he had chosen not to revisit this season. "I still believe he could have been very competitive in a July Cup, but the field split the time he ran in it and it was never an ideal situation," he said.

Asked what comes next, Appleby stopped short of a firm declaration. "I think it's probably straight to the Breeders' Cup Mile now," he said, adding that conditions at Keeneland in the autumn remain unknown, though York had at least shown Notable Speech's versatility to ground. A stallion career at Darley awaits once the season ends, Appleby confirming that Notable Speech will retire to stud regardless of how the Breeders' Cup goes.

Notable Speech arrived at York a proven miler with a stud career already arranged and left it with something broader on his record, a horse capable of winning on ground and at a trip he had never previously been asked to master. That answer, delivered in his final season, travels with Appleby and Buick to wherever autumn takes them next.
