Royal Champion Overpowers Facteur Cheval In Riyadh
A commanding display of sustained brilliance from the oldest horse in the field brought Karl Burke a first Group One winner on Saudi Arabian soil as Royal Champion stormed to victory in the inaugural running of the Gr.1 Neom Turf Cup at King Abdulaziz Racecourse on Saturday evening.
The 8YO gelding, ridden with supreme confidence by Oisin Murphy, powered clear of his 10 rivals to claim the US$3,000,000 (SAR11.2 million) prize by four and three-quarter lengths in a performance that underlined his remarkable consistency at the highest level.
A Veteran's Masterclass Over 2100 Metres
Sent off as one of the leading fancies following his imperious victory in the Gr.2 Bahrain International Trophy in November, Royal Champion settled into a comfortable rhythm through the early stages as the field navigated the left-handed turf course. Murphy, who has enjoyed a stellar run since reclaiming the British Champion Jockey title in 2024, bided his time before delivering the son of Shamardal with a decisive move entering the final two furlongs. The response was emphatic. Royal Champion lengthened away from his rivals with the authority of a horse operating at the peak of his powers, recording a time of 2:06.22 over the 2100 metres.
It was a performance that Burke, speaking after the Bahrain International Trophy, might well have anticipated. The Middleham handler had noted then that his charge was a horse of considerable talent, telling the Racing Post that Royal Champion was capable of excelling over further than a mile and a quarter. That prophecy was fulfilled in spectacular fashion on the biggest turf stage Saudi Arabia has yet offered.
For the connections of the late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, the victory served as a fitting tribute. Royal Champion now boasts nine career victories, including the Gr.2 York Stakes, the Gr.3 Winter Derby at Lingfield and a creditable third to Delacroix in the Gr.1 Irish Champion Stakes, demonstrating a versatility across surfaces that few of his contemporaries can match.
Facteur Cheval Runs With Distinction In Second
Jerome Reynier's Facteur Cheval, the 2024 Gr.1 Dubai Turf hero, emerged as the best of the rest under Mickael Barzalona, finishing four and three-quarter lengths behind the winner in second. The seven-year-old, who was tackling 2100 metres for the first time in his career having previously excelled at around a mile, ran with great credit. Reynier had spoken before the race of the horse's relentless attitude, telling Turf Diario that Facteur Cheval always competes with total commitment.
That characteristic was evident once again as the Team Valor International and Gary Barber-owned entire kept galloping to the line, though he was never able to land a blow on the winner.
George Boughey's Survie, the 1.9 million guineas Tattersalls purchase who was making just her second start for new connections, finished a further length and a quarter back in third under Ryan Moore. The five-year-old daughter of Churchill shaped with encouragement on her first start in the Middle East and appears sure to have a bright future in these waters.
The race, elevated to Group One status for the first time this year with an increased purse from US$2,000,000, attracted runners from seven nations and marked a significant milestone for Saudi Arabian racing. Defending champion Shin Emperor, trained by Yoshito Yahagi, could not reproduce the form of his 2025 triumph and was unable to feature prominently.
For Burke, a trainer whose operation in North Yorkshire continues to punch above its weight on the international stage, it was a result that confirmed Royal Champion as one of the most durable middle-distance performers in training.
