Sheikh Nasser's Bargain Buy Pays Off
Al Aali got the Goodwood Festival underway in style for Bahrain's Victorious Forever operation, William Buick nursing the four-year-old through from off the pace to score by three-quarters of a length from Noble Horizon in the Chesterfield Cup, with Night Breeze a neck back in third. Trainer George Scott, whose stable had taken time to unlock the French import, revealed the story behind the purchase: "Sheikh Nasser actually picked him himself at the Arc sale, we thought we'd slightly overpaid, but he's gone and taken a big step forward." Rumba Numba justified home hopes of black type with a nose verdict over Nanino Niyati in the day's first Fillies' Handicap, Electrifarhh a further three-quarters of a length back in third. Al Shaqab Racing's Wid, slowly away and niggled along in rear, stayed on into fourth under Edward Greatrex, with Wathnan Racing's Proposal fifth for William Haggas. Roger Varian, whose mare is unbeaten in two starts this term, said: "We've always half-hoped she's a black type filly and I think she probably is. At some point we'll ask her the question at Listed level."
Sing The Blues Completes a Double
Sing The Blues completed a riding double for Cieren Fallon on the card, squeezing a narrow path right up the inside rail to deny Woohoo by a neck in the closing EBF Fillies' Handicap. Secret History, rallying under 5lb-claimer Ashley Lewis, went down by two and a half lengths in third for trainer Ed Walker. Trained by Martin Dunne for owner Gary Downie, the winner closed out a card in which UK domestic yards, not Gulf silks, had the final word.
