Scandinavia Retains Goodwood Cup Stakes Crown Again

A Loose Horse, A Lost Chance

A riderless horse angling across the track in the closing stages might have settled a lesser event outright, and even here it left enough doubt that nobody could say for certain what would have happened without it. Amiloc, loose since parting company with Hector Crouch at the start, drifted into Trawlerman's path with the two market leaders locked together entering the final two furlongs of the Gr.1 Goodwood Cup Stakes, checking his stride at the moment William Buick needed him at his most fluent.
The Gr.1 Goodwood Cup Stakes was run over 2m at Goodwood Racecourse on 28 July 2026, where Scandinavia, a 4YO colt trained by Aidan O'Brien, beat Trawlerman by eight and a half lengths in a winning time of 3m 23.53s to collect £283,550 (US$377,122) of the £491,850 (US$654,160) purse. Ridden by Ryan Moore and owned by Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Mrs John Magnier, the victory was his second successive win in the race.
 
Ballydoyle had left both Scandinavia and Illinois in contention heading into the race, but it was the senior partner who did the damage. Trawlerman had anticipated the start under Buick and set out to make all, with Amiloc's early departure adding to the sense of a race unfolding without a script. Moore tracked the leader throughout, sitting closer to Trawlerman than any other rival aboard the son of Justify, and when Amiloc angled across Trawlerman's line again heading down the hill, Scandinavia was already shaping to strike. He was scarcely off the bridle before the two-furlong marker; by the furlong pole Scandinavia held the advantage he would not surrender, stretching it to the eight-and-a-half-length margin confirmed at the line, the response Buick had been hoping to see from the pair's duel a month earlier never quite arriving.
 
Buick raised the interference from Amiloc in the aftermath; Moore did not agree it had affected the result. The margin left little doubt about the outcome: Scandinavia's second successive win in the Goodwood Cup Stakes underlined the gap between him and this year's staying division.
 

Chasing The Ghost Of Yeats

Aidan O'Brien has now won the race three times, following Kyprios and Yeats into that company at Goodwood. Scandinavia's eight-and-a-half-length winning margin, achieved with Moore able to sit and wait rather than drive for the line, was the detail that mattered most. Ryan Moore, who partnered both Kyprios and Scandinavia, drew the comparison himself. “Kyprios had nearly a perfect race record when he went over staying trips and this horse has the same now,” he said. “This lad has won a Leger — I couldn't say he was better than Kyprios, but I'm lucky enough to have ridden them both. I can't think of too many who'd have beaten them.”

Moore said the interference from Amiloc had not altered the outcome. “I don't think it was significant because I knew it was coming, I knew William was there, and I didn't have him stuck to the fence,” he said. “He did come across him, but it didn't make any difference to the result at all.” Buick, inevitably, saw it differently, arguing that a horse of Trawlerman's calibre being checked at that stage of a two-mile Group One contest could never be dismissed as inconsequential, whatever the final margin went on to suggest.

Third For The Al Maktoum Silks

Third home, three-quarters of a length behind Trawlerman, was Rahiebb, the Roger Varian-trained 4YO colt carrying the silks of Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum. It was the highest placing at Group One level yet for the son of Frankel, whose only previous run in that company had ended tailed off behind this same pair over the extra half-mile of the Gr.1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot the previous month. Two miles, rather than two and a half, proved the difference: he raced in touch with the pace throughout and was still finding his stride inside the final furlong, denied a clearer look at second only by being niggled along early off a steady gallop.

Varian read the run as evidence that the trip itself was no longer the question. “The race did not set up too well for us because it got a bit messy and they did not go very quick, but he ran well,” he said. “He got locked away at the wrong time off a steady gallop and the two big horses got first run. I am not suggesting it stopped us from winning, but I think it probably stopped us from finishing second. He got the trip well, which I was pleased about, and I would not rule out going further again with him.”

Varian indicated Rahiebb would return to York before a possible step up in trip is weighed later in the season. “He will likely go to York and we will also look at the Irish St Leger,” he said. “Next year he will be a stronger horse and I would not rule out going beyond two miles again. He looked a stayer today and I think he will keep getting better.”

For Aidan O'Brien, the plan remains straightforward: keep racing the horse who has now won back-to-back runnings of the race. “He keeps winning and I don't know where the bottom is,” Moore said. “Hopefully I won't find it. His stride doesn't shorten — he stayed going all the way through the line.” The interference from Amiloc did not change the result, and Scandinavia's win took his record in the race to two wins from two runs.
