Some racehorses transcend the sport’s statistical framework and become something altogether more personal — living, breathing embodiments of an owner’s passion, a stable’s excellence, and a racecourse’s identity.
Rebel’s Romance is one of those rare creatures, and his victory in the Gr.2 Dubai City of Gold on Super Saturday provided a moment so charged with emotion that even HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, and founder of Godolphin, could not contain his delight.
A Ruler’s Joy
As Rebel’s Romance crossed the line, 1.66 lengths clear of Fort George with Burdett Road a further seven lengths back in third, Sheikh Mohammed was spotted on course at Meydan Racecourse in a brief but unmistakable moment of spontaneous celebration. It was a dance of pure, unscripted joy that spoke louder than any post-race analysis ever could — a fleeting gesture that carried the weight of everything this horse represents: Godolphin’s global reach, Charlie Appleby’s training brilliance, and the deep personal bond between an owner and an animal who has delivered on the grandest stages for the better part of half a decade.

Appleby could barely hold himself together afterwards. “It takes a bit for me to get emotional, but I love him,” the trainer said, and the crack in his voice told its own story. “He won a UAE Derby, we tried to turn him into a World Cup horse but his form on dirt doesn’t particularly go the right way. We decided to try him on the turf and that sort of sparked a new lease of life in him. From there on, he’s just been a rock star.”
At eight years of age, Rebel’s Romance has no business being this good. The Godolphin homebred son of Dubawi out of the Street Cry mare Minidress was recording his 21st career victory from 31 starts and a 16th Group race success, taking his career earnings to US$15.8 million (AED58 million). Rated 121, the highest-rated turf horse in the Godolphin roster, he has won nine times at the highest level, including the 2024 Gr.1 Dubai Sheema Classic and the 2021 Gr.2 UAE Derby.
His last start had been a runner-up finish to Ethical Diamond in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar just three months ago. A turf record of 16 wins from 23 starts speaks to a dominance that defies time.
Cruise Control At Meydan
The race was a masterclass in controlled aggression. Kihavah set the early tempo under Patrick Dobbs, leading the field of eight through the first half of the journey. Passion and Glory moved into second for Saeed bin Suroor, whose pre-race comments made clear the 10YO was here as a stepping stone. “We gave him a break since he ran last time,” bin Suroor had said. “The Gold Cup, that’s the main race for him. That’s the target.”
Under William Buick’s familiar guidance, Rebel’s Romance tracked the pace in a clear third with the nonchalance of a horse who knows every blade of grass at Meydan Racecourse. Fort George, the progressive 4YO Territories gelding trained by Ed Walker, sat fourth for Kieran Shoemark, while Burdett Road and Ruling Dynasty were held up further back.
Approaching the 400-metre marker, Buick barely moved as Rebel’s Romance coasted to the front. Fort George briefly threatened two furlongs out, but the favourite quickened away approaching the final furlong and was eased close home. The time of 2:28.73 was well within standard. Fort George ran the race of his life in second — an honourable defeat for the Walker team. Burdett Road stayed on for third under Oisin Murphy, while Passion and Glory, runner-up 12 months ago, was disappointing in fifth.
Horse Of A Lifetime
Buick’s tribute afterwards carried the quiet reverence of a man who understands what he has. “He’s a horse of a lifetime and I do feel different when I’m riding this horse,” the jockey said. “He’s been great for my career. He’s taken me around the world. His achievement is global and his legacy gets deeper and deeper.”
Then came the line that captured the mood of the evening: “Eventually when you stop riding or stop training, he’s a horse that you will forever remember. We’ve got to enjoy him while we still have him. He is a credit to himself but he’s also a credit to the team behind him.”
For Appleby, whose career record reads 201 wins from 818 runners at a 24.6% strike rate, Rebel’s Romance occupies a singular place. The Godolphin trainer had arrived at Super Saturday with a strong hand — 65 runners this season yielding 11 winners and US$1.63 million (AED6 million) in prize money — but it was the old guard, not the exciting new generation, who rescued what threatened to become a blank evening.
Across the nine-race card, Godolphin’s broader squad endured a chastening night. The operation’s season figures of 12 wins from 86 runners at a 14% strike rate told their own story. The most instructive disappointment came in the Jumeirah 2000 Guineas (Listed), where Appleby’s three promising 3YOs were supposed to announce themselves. Talk Of New York, the Wootton Bassett colt highly touted following an explosive debut at Kempton in October, raced freely and could manage only third.
Pacific Avenue ran creditably for second, while Pacifica Pier finished seventh. All three were beaten by Title Role, trained by Simon and Ed Crisford. “All of the talk was about Charlie’s horse, who had been training well, but we had the experience with two runs out here,” said Ed Crisford.
What Next For A Legend?
Appleby had struck the right note before the race. “Rebel’s Romance returns to Dubai in great shape,” he said. “He is eight now, but you couldn’t knock his performances last season and he appears to have retained all his enthusiasm throughout the winter.” The answer was emphatic. This is a horse who simply refuses to accept the passage of time, and on a night when the sport needed a feel-good story, he delivered one with characteristic generosity.
The victory gives Rebel’s Romance automatic entry to the US$6 million (AED22 million) Gr.1 Dubai Sheema Classic on World Cup night, a race he won two years ago. Appleby will weigh the Sheema Classic against the Gr.2 Dubai Gold Cup over 3200 metres, but was measured in his ambitions. “The Sheema Classic is a nice conversation to have, but he is getting older and I’ll look after the old boy,” the trainer said. “We’ll take it race by race, but we wanted him to show everyone what a great racehorse he is and thankfully he’s done it again tonight.”
Appleby added one final thought, glancing towards the royal enclosure: “It’s great for HH Sheikh Mohammed to be here tonight with all his family. We wanted him to come here and to show everyone what a great racehorse he is, and thankfully he’s gone and proved it again tonight.”
A Night To Remember
Whatever the decision for World Cup night, one image from Super Saturday will endure long after the formbook has faded: Sheikh Mohammed, the man who built Meydan Racecourse and reimagined what racing could be in the Gulf, moved to dance by an 8YO gelding who refuses to grow old. Rebel’s Romance has been many things — a Derby winner, a globe-trotter, a Group One champion on three continents. On this night, he was something simpler: a horse who made people feel. Sheikh Mohammed’s feet did the rest.
