O'Brien's Stayer Holds Off Tabletalk In Riyadh

A thrilling conclusion to the Gr.2 Red Sea Turf Handicap at King Abdulaziz Racecourse on Saturday evening saw the Joseph O'Brien-trained Sons And Lovers claim the US$2.5 million (SAR9.4 million) feature over 3000 metres on the opening day of the Saudi Cup Meeting 2026. Ridden with supreme confidence by Ireland's champion jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle, the 5YO gelding held off a sustained challenge from Tom Clover's Tabletalk by half a length, with Juddmonte's Tarriance a further neck away in third under Oisin Murphy for Andrew Balding.

The victory represented a significant international breakthrough for the son of Study Of Man, who had been earmarked for overseas targets ever since his front-running success in the Gr.3 Ballyroan Stakes at Leopardstown last August. That day, O'Brien had spoken openly about the horse's future on the global stage. "There is a race here for him on Champions Weekend and we're also going to look at some international targets in the autumn," O'Brien told RTE after that Leopardstown triumph. "The owners have Absurde who ran well in Melbourne a couple of times and there is a good chance we could look at something like that for him."

A Long-Held Plan Comes Together

The Riyadh assignment had been firmly on the agenda for some time, with O'Brien stating ahead of the Saudi Cup weekend that his team had carefully mapped out the campaign. "These are races we have targeted well in advance," he told the Irish Times. "They are competitive, international events, and the standard continues to rise every year." The trainer, who had been approaching the remarkable milestone of 1,500 career winners, was represented by two runners in the race after scratching Melbourne Cup runner-up Goodie Two Shoes, with Tennessee Stud his other contender. It was Sons And Lovers, however, carrying the colours of the H.O.S. Syndicate, who delivered the goods under a perfectly judged ride from Browne McMonagle.

The 22-year-old Donegal native, who claimed his first Irish champion jockey title in 2025 with 95 winners and capped that season by winning the Breeders' Cup Turf aboard Ethical Diamond, was reunited with a horse he knows intimately from their Ballyroan Stakes partnership. Stepping up from 12 furlongs to nearly two miles in Riyadh, Sons And Lovers showed that the stamina reserves O'Brien had always suspected were genuine, travelling kindly through the contest before asserting in the closing stages.

Clover's Tabletalk Runs A Bold Race In Defeat

The runner-up Tabletalk ran a career-best in only his first start as a gelding. Clover, who had been riding the son of Camelot in morning trackwork throughout the week in Riyadh, had spoken bullishly about the trip suiting his charge. "He's a horse that's going to stay a few miles, we hope," the trainer told the Thoroughbred Daily News. "We're the second-highest-rated horse in the race, which is a good thing." Under Rossa Ryan, Tabletalk produced a fine effort off top weight of 59.5 kilograms and was only denied by the half-length margin, confirming himself as a high-class staying performer for owner Abdulla Al Mansoori.

Tarriance, the Frankel gelding trained by Balding and owned by Juddmonte, ran on stoutly for third from a low weight of 54.5 kilograms, suggesting the 4YO has a bright future in top-level staying events. The finishing time of 3:11.56 reflected a truly run contest over the three turns of the King Abdulaziz turf course.

For O'Brien, the victory added Saudi Arabia to a remarkable list of countries in which he has achieved Group or Grade-level success. Formerly trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam, Sons And Lovers has flourished since joining the Piltown handler and now has a prize worth US$1,500,000 to add to a growing CV. On this evidence, the future looks exceptionally bright for a horse whose rise through the ranks shows no sign of abating.
