The opening day of the 2026 St Leger Festival on Thursday 10 September 2026 belonged to a mare who had waited her turn. Waardah's win in the Gr.2 Park Hill Fillies' Stakes carried the shape of a story Doncaster has told before: two horses who filled the frame in 2025 turned up again in 2026, only for a fresh face to beat them both. Speed Of Sound Opens St Leger Festival

The afternoon's first race, a 6½f fillies' nursery handicap worth £55,000 (US$73,150), went to the topweight. Trained by Richard Spencer for owner Phil Cunningham, Speed Of Sound made all under Saffie Osborne to beat Angel In My Heart by 1¾ lengths, with Adrian Paul Keatley's filly running from out of the handicap. Waardah Wears Down Consent Late

The 4YO filly, trained by Owen Burrows for owner Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum, raced in touch in third early before dropping to fourth turning for home, then improved on the bridle through the straight and was shaken up approaching the final furlong to wear down Consent, the pacesetter, winning going away by 1¾ lengths in 3 minutes 5.52 seconds over 1m 6f 115y on good to soft going. Danielle finished second, beaten 1¾ lengths, with Consent third a further 1¼ lengths back — the same two horses who filled the placings in the corresponding 2025 running, Danielle fourth then and Consent runner-up. Waardah, bred by Godolphin out of Neesaan by Postponed, took her lifetime record to nine starts, four wins, a second and a third, with career earnings of US$496,874.

Night In Vegas Justifies Top Billing

That same pattern, of a familiar frame reordered by a fresh winner, carried through the rest of the card as the afternoon moved into the meeting's younger, more competitive company. The £300,000 (US$399,000) 2-Y-O Stakes, worth £410,695 (US$546,224) in guaranteed prize money over 6f 111y, had carried the day's largest field, and Night In Vegas justified top billing under Charles Bishop for trainer Eve Johnson Houghton. Satellite Of Love chased home in second, beaten half a length, with Dorigo a further 3½ lengths back in third for Kevin Ryan. Seventeen went to post, with A Bear Affair fourth for Richard Hannon and William Haggas's God Given Talent fifth.

Handicap Depth Anchors the Afternoon

The afternoon's midway handicap, run over 1m 2f 43y for three-year-olds rated 0-105, carried a £70,000 (US$93,100) pot. Bourbon Blues, trained by Brian Meehan and ridden by Ryan Moore, got up to beat Roger Varian's Knights Charge by a head, with Richard Spencer's Wild Thoughts a further half-length back in third under Saffie Osborne. Fuel The Jet Wins Second Nursery Test

A second nursery followed hard on the first, run over the extended seven furlongs for a similar £35,000 (US$46,550) pot. Tom Clover's Fuel The Jet, ridden by Neil Callan, made most of the running to beat William Knight's Sanbona Warrior by two lengths under Marco Ghiani, with Rod Millman's Midgham Man a further half-length back in third under Lewis Edmunds. Andrew Balding's Storm Blade finished fourth, Ralph Beckett's Undiscovered fifth under Rossa Ryan, and Richard Hannon's Rafe's Da Man sixth. Eight went to post after Kach Above was withdrawn on unsuitable ground.

Devil's Peak Runs under William Buick

The card's last handicap returned the spotlight to the older, more experienced handicap ranks. Devil's Peak, trained by John and Thady Gosden, made most of the running under William Buick to win the day's finale over 1m 3f 197y for three-year-olds and up rated 0-90, beating Patrick Neville's Alfred Wincham by 1½ lengths under Rossa Ryan. David O'Meara's My Ballyquinn was third, a further half-length back, with William Knight's Brighton View fourth. Nine went to post after Eniac was withdrawn on a vet's certificate, closing a programme whose two Group races bookended six handicaps and nurseries of the kind that give the opening day its working character rather than its headlines.

Doncaster's first Leger Festival day found its through-line in Waardah, a filly who had watched Danielle and Consent finish ahead of her in 2025 and turned the tables on both twelve months later. Night In Vegas gave the big 2YO prize its winner, but it was the Park Hill result that carried the day's real weight — proof that this course's form lines run in circles as often as they run forward.

Godolphin's blue silks carried two runners into the winner's enclosure across the afternoon. Musical Times, trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick, won the Gr.2 May Hill Stakes, while the operation's Al Wathba, also trained by Appleby and ridden by Buick, finished fourth in the closing mile nursery handicap. Waardah, winner of the Gr.2 Park Hill Fillies' Stakes, was bred by Godolphin and races in the silks of Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum. Jaber Abdullah's Waasil finished third in the mile nursery handicap, and Hussain Alabbas Lootah's Zarakova was fifth in the same race. Isa Salman Al Khalifa's Art Of Life ran in the afternoon's opening nursery, Abdulla Al Mansoori's Brighton View finished fourth in the day's closing handicap, and Ali Abdulla Saeed's King Of Earth was ninth in the earlier three-year-old handicap.
