Wathnan Racing Doubles Up On A Frantic Goodwood Friday
Two Wins, One Shared Verdict
Two wins from nine runners told the real story of Goodwood's fourth day, on 31 July 2026, and neither carried the card's largest purse. Wathnan Racing's expansion into British racing produced its clearest evidence yet as Archivist, fresh from Meydan carnival duty, and Silver Lake, unbeaten in handicaps, each won for the operation within the same afternoon. Godolphin opened its account through Into The Light, the King George Stakes produced the day's most unexpected result, and Abdulrazaq Mohamdi's homebred Shayem beat Charlie Appleby's leading hope in a Group Three contest between two Gulf-linked operations.
American Affair Holds On For Goldie
Paul Mulrennan steered American Affair through a driving Gr.2 King George Stakes to score by half a length, with Jim Goldie's six-year-old holding off a game challenge from Rumstar under Rob Hornby. Asfoora's Goodwood redemption mission again fell short, the Australian-trained mare filling fourth having chased home American Affair once before, in the King Charles III Stakes. Wathnan Racing's Night Raider, conceding weight after a recent Group win, managed only 10th of 15 runners. The win was worth £170,130 (US$226,000) to the winning connections, run on good to firm ground over the course's minimum trip.
Wathnan Racing Lands The Golden Mile
Archivist's Arrival At Wathnan Racing paid off in full as the Hamad Al Jehani-trained gelding powered clear under Callum Rodriguez to land the Golden Mile by a length and a quarter from Cerulean Bay. The four-year-old's Dubai World Cup Carnival mileage at Meydan over the winter had sharpened him, and Al Jehani, who saddled three runners, had picked him out as the stable's likely winner beforehand. Wathnan's Blue Brother, ridden by James Doyle, could finish only eighth of 18, while stablemate English Oak trailed home 16th. The £90,195 (US$120,000) success was Archivist's first for the yard since his move from previous connections in August 2025.
Shayem Denies Talk Of New York
Clifford Lee sent Shayem past a keen-going Talk Of New York inside the final furlong to land the Gr.3 Thoroughbred Stakes by half a length, denying the in-form Godolphin colt. Karl Burke's colt is a homebred for Abdulrazaq Mohamdi, described by his trainer afterwards as "a great supporter of ours from Dubai," while the pacemaking Catullus, also Godolphin's, held on for third having set the gallop for the operation's principal hope. Talk Of New York now needs quicker ground to confirm the level he showed in the St James's Palace Stakes.
Galen Holds On From Boiling Point
Dylan Browne McMonagle completed a festival double when Galen dug deep to hold off the fast-finishing Boiling Point by a neck in the Bentinck Conditions Stakes, with Joseph Patrick O'Brien's five-year-old doing enough despite hanging right inside the final two furlongs. Boiling Point, campaigned by the executors of the late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, rallied gamely for Clifford Lee having led early, while Juddmonte's Jonquil claimed third on the line. Wathnan Racing's Diego Ventura and Haatem filled fourth and fifth. It was Browne McMonagle's second winner of the afternoon, having already steered Defiantly to victory in the day's opening handicap.
Silver Lake Seals Second Festival Win
Saffie Osborne settled Silver Lake in behind the pace before easing to the front inside the final two furlongs to win the EBF Fillies' Handicap. The Wathnan-owned three-year-old, successful on a first handicap start at Salisbury on 11 July 2026, pulled clear of the field under a confident ride, with Lady Dora Mae, ridden by Billy Loughnane and carrying Dubai interests, chasing home in second. The win was William Haggas's second of the festival and Wathnan Racing's second on the card, the pair completing their afternoon's business inside three hours of each other.
Defiantly Grinds Out The Marathon
Dylan Browne McMonagle opened the card's account when Defiantly ground out a three-length success in the marathon Goodwood Handicap, the Joseph Patrick O'Brien-trained gelding cutting out the running for Australia Bloodstock having gone down by only a head in the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot on 16 June 2026. The syndicate's Rob McInnes described him afterwards as "a real, genuine one-paced stayer" who simply keeps galloping. Berkshire Sundance rallied for second under Oisin Murphy, with Wathnan Racing's Valiancy, racing for William Haggas, only ninth of 15 finishers, stablemate Sea Of Kings one place ahead of her in eighth.
Revels Snatches It On The Line
Sam James got up in the final stride to land the Nursery Handicap on Revels, denying Ryan Moore's mount Dubai Champion by a short head in a driving finish between K R Burke's colt and Ben Haslam's improving juvenile. Innichen, ridden by Tom Marquand, completed the frame a further half-length back, with Sovereign Glory close up in fourth for Charles Hills. It gave Burke, already among the winners with Shayem earlier on the card, a second success from his growing two-year-old squad.
Into The Light Ends The Wait
William Buick ended Godolphin's run without a winner on the card when Into The Light powered clear inside the final furlong to land the concluding handicap for Charlie Appleby, seeing off Devil's Peak, ridden by former stable jockey James Doyle for John and Thady Gosden, by a length and three-quarters over the 1m 3f trip. Waterford Castle claimed third under Billy Loughnane, with Astracornus, ridden by Saffie Osborne, close up in fourth. It was Godolphin's only winner from their runners across the card, closing out the afternoon's results.
Friday's principal story was Wathnan Racing's two winners from nine runners, spread across the Golden Mile and the EBF Fillies' Handicap. Godolphin took one winner and two places from three runners between the Thoroughbred Stakes and the concluding handicap.
