There's a chance that a Shadwell homebred could receive the Cartier Horse of the Year award for a second year in a row, thanks to Mostahdaf's impressive tactical victory in the Juddmonte International last week.
The Cartier Racing Awards are fast approaching and there is already talk of which horses are in contention for the prestigious titles. Last year, Baaeed took home both the Cartier Horse of the Year and Cartier Older Horse honours, thanks to a stunning performance at York's season centrepiece where he beat Mishriff by six and a half lengths.
However, this year's competition is fierce, with Mostahdaf making an impressive tactical victory in the Juddmonte International last week, putting him in the running for the Cartier Horse of the Year award.
Mostahdaf Dominates Juddmonte International To Climb Cartier Horse Of The Year Standings
Mostahdaf's victory saw him lead from start to finish under the guidance of Frankie Dettori, denying Nashwa by a length, and with last year's Cartier Horse of the Year points leader, Paddington, coming in third. The 5YO has now moved up to second place in the Cartier Horse of the Year standings and is currently at the head of the Cartier Older Horse category with 102 points.
Despite his defeat at York, Paddington continues to hold a significant lead in the points for Cartier Horse of the Year and Cartier 3YO Colt, having won the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas, St James's Palace Stakes, Coral-Eclipse, and Qatar Sussex Stakes. The Cartier Racing Awards were established in 1991 to reward excellence in horseracing and this year's awards will be presented at the Dorchester Hotel in London on the evening of Thursday, 9th November.
There has been significant movement across the categories in the Cartier Racing Awards this year, particularly in the Cartier Older Horse division. Mqse de Sevigne has excelled at Deauville over the summer and completed a Group One double at the Normandy course with a nose success over Via Sistana in the Sumbe Prix Jean Romanet. Warm Heart could yet challenge for the Cartier 3YO Filly honours following her battling victory in the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks, with Juddmonte Irish Oaks 1-2 Savethelastdance and Bluestocking finishing third and fourth.
Winners of the two European Group One races for juveniles this year make the early running in the Cartier 2YO Colt division. Bucanero Fuerte produced a dominant display in the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh, while Vandeek unleashed a strong late run to land Deauville's Sumbe Prix Morny. Ramatuelle went down by a short-neck to Vandeek at Deauville and the Prix Robert Papin winner leads the Cartier 2YO Filly standings ahead of Royal Ascot scorer Porta Fortuna.
With so many talented horses in the running for the Cartier Racing Awards, it's sure to be an exciting and unpredictable event. We can't wait to see who takes home the honours at the Dorchester Hotel in November.
