Manager Peter Burrell revealed on Tuesday that Frankie Dettori will not attempt to win his first Lexus Melbourne Cup at Flemington next Tuesday (4.00), opting instead to ride on another lucrative card at Randwick on the same day. Dettori finished second on his final mount in the 2019 Australian Derby with Master Of Reality, after which he was demoted to fourth place. In 2015, he came close to winning the event but finished second on Max Dynamite. The inaugural running of The Big Dance, a Quality Handicap over a mile worth A$2million, will take place on Randwick's card in Sydney, Australia, while he is there. However, he will not be attempting to add a Melbourne Cup win to his brilliant CV this year. It has been reported in Australia that for Saturday's A$10m Golden Eagle at Rosehill, Frank Dettori will ride both Kris Lees's Hosier (trained by Lees) and Chris Waller and Al Shaqab Racing's Welwal.
"The visa only came through late yesterday [Monday] and it's all been a bit of a mad dash, but it's done now," Burrell said.
"There wasn't a logical ride in the race [Melbourne Cup] and he wasn't going to go to Melbourne. Then this ride came up for Al Shaqab, so it's off around the world he goes again. The crowd in Sydney are very excited about him coming so it's all worked out well. We just hope the horse runs well as it's a big trip,” Burell commented further.
