Aloha West, the surprise victor of the 2021 Qatar Racing Breeders' Cup Sprint (Gr.1), has been retired from racing and will now stand at Mill Ridge Farm for $10,000 in Lexington.
On the 14th, as part of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, the 5YO son of Hard Spun will be made available for inspection at Mill Ridge at 2 p.m. daily until the sale concludes on the 16th.
Aloha West, who was primarily promoted throughout his career by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and trainer Wayne Catalano, ended his run in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (Gr.1) on November 5 at Keeneland by coming in 11th-last. After starting his fourth year in racing with a third-place finish in the Churchill Downs Stakes Presented by Ford (Gr.1) and a fourth-place finish behind superstar Flightline when stretching out in trip in the Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan Handicap, he won the Kelly's Landing Overnight Stakes in July at Churchill Downs (Gr.1).
When it came to the 2021 Breeders' Cup Sprint, Aloha West narrowly defeated Dr. Schivel, a multiple grade 1 winner. The nine-horse field included Aloha West, ridden by Jose Ortiz, who finished last. Ortiz took Aloha West five wide as they rounded the last bend back into sixth place. He made a bold charge in the last stretch, allowing him to pass the likes of Jackie's Warrior and Special Reserve, both of whom would go on to win the 2021 Champion Male Sprinter title.
With a record of 6-2-1 in 13 starts and earnings of $1,507,290, Aloha West has decided to call it a career.
