On Monday, Mick Price is set to reveal his new acquisition, Laced Up Heels, during a Cranbourne jumpout. The West Australian expat will be part of a three-pronged attack on the A$10m Golden Eagle.
Amelia's Jewel Outshined: 4YO Filly's Listed Race Win
In 2021, Price and co-trainer Michael Kent Jr emerged victorious in the Golden Eagle, which was valued at $7.5 million at the time. They achieved this feat with the remarkable I'm Thunderstruck.
Unfortunately, Laced Up Heels, under the guidance of WA horseman Luke Fernie, faced misfortune in three Melbourne starts during the autumn season.
Last November, the promising 4YO filly, who is a descendant of Toronado, triumphed over the highly anticipated West Aussie filly Amelia's Jewel in a Listed race.
"You've got to, don't you? $10m (prizemoney)… she's a nice filly turning mare, while I wouldn't rate her with Amelia's Jewel, we'll be ambitious if we can.
"She'll race in all black-type races, apart from first-up… I think a beautiful distance for her is 1400m plus 100m (for the $10m)."
Amenable, a 4YO son of Lonhro who belongs to Group 2, has developed into a robust and powerful horse in the spring.
Last autumn, he secured the fifth position in a chaotic Australian Guineas race, where he regained his momentum after encountering a tight situation that led to a severe accident in the prestigious Flemington Group 1 event.
Maximillius, a fellow horse from the same stable, unfortunately, suffered a fall during the Australian Guineas. However, he will make his comeback this Saturday at Flemington, participating in the Gr.3 Aurie's Star Handicap.
"He's a good rolling 1200m-1400m horse, as a coming four-year-old gelding I think he'll have a good preparation if he's well placed," Price said.
"We're not going to be too ambitious with him, but he'll run in some nice races by the same token."
Maximillius managed to escape unscathed from the unfortunate incident, which left rising star jockey Ethan Brown hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. As a result, Mark Zahra was suspended for a month for causing the fall.
