Legarto, the Kiwi star, may be heading to Rosehill this upcoming spring as her connections have their sights set on the enticing A$10 million prize of the Golden Eagle.
During the autumn season, this progeny of Proisir embarked on a successful Australian campaign. With a powerful late surge, she claimed victory in the prestigious Group 1 Australian Guineas. Now, as a 4YO, trainer Ken Kelso reveals that she has returned in exceptional form.
Trainer Kelso, in partnership with his wife Bev, expressed sheer delight after witnessing Legarto's impressive performance in her first public trial at Te Rapa just last week.
"I thought it was a good trial. It was a very heavy track and she hit the line well so she'll have another trial in late August," Kelso said.
"We'll definitely be throwing in a nomination for the Golden Eagle but I'd say her first-up run will determine where we go with her."
Legarto Prepares For Prestigious Tarzino Trophy
Legarto will begin her latest preparation in the Gr,1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) on September 9 at Hastings. This race has historical significance in Australia, as it has produced notable horses in the past.
For instance, last year it showcased the world-class Imperatriz, who finished fourth, and in 2019 Melody Belle emerged as the winner before her victory in the Gr.1 Empire Rose Stakes.
"If the track is reasonable at Hastings she'll kick off in the Group 1 Tarzino (Trophy) at weight-for-age and then we'll decide," Kelso said.
"It's always a strong race so it will give us a good idea how competitive she will be against the older, more seasoned horses and it will determine where we go next.
"But she'll definitely be kicking off over here (in New Zealand)."
Instead of pushing on to the All-Star Mile after her success in the Guineas, Legarto's connections decided to send her to the paddock. Although it would have been tough to pass up if the race was at Flemington, trainer Kelso believes this decision has paid off. Legarto has done exceptionally well during her time in the spelling paddock.
"Had the All-Star Mile had of been at Flemington we probably would have gone there but The Valley made it tricky for her," Kelso said.
"But she definitely came on after that, she put on about 50 kilos so she's a big and strong mare now.
"It was a huge result getting that Group 1 at Flemington on the breeding page and hopefully she can go on with it in the spring."
In addition to her participation in the Golden Eagle, Prowess is also a contender for the Cox Plate.
