Shadwell celebrated a remarkable victory at Haydock as Naqeeb emerged triumphant in the 2800m handicap race on the Haydock Sprint Stakes undercard. This win could potentially be a game-changer for the talented colt.
Naqeeb, a half-brother to the renowned Shadwell stars Baaeed and Hukum, proved his mettle by securing his second consecutive victory. Having previously triumphed at Kempton in mid-August, this race marked his second start and yet another success in his fledgling racing career.
Under the guidance of jockey Tom Marquand, Naqeeb tactfully maneuvered through the field of seven contenders, closely trailing Charlie Johnston's French Invasion, ridden by Joe Fanning. Maintaining a steady pace throughout the race, Naqeeb was poised for success.
As the race entered the final stretch, Marquand expertly urged Naqeeb forward. Responding to the jockey's call, Naqeeb surged past his competitors, ultimately leading the pack with ease. Crossing the finish line, Naqeeb secured a comfortable victory with a length and a quarter to spare.
Trailing behind the triumphant colt was Blindedbythelights, trained by Sir Mark Prescott and guided by Luke Morris, who finished in second place. A further length and a half behind, Denmark, ridden by James Doyle and trained by Aidan O'Brien, secured a respectable third-place finish.
Naqeeb's victory at Haydock not only showcased his exceptional talent but also hinted at a promising future. With his prestigious lineage and impressive track record, Naqeeb has undoubtedly carved a path for himself as a rising star in the racing world.
Haggas said, “I thought a mark of 100 was steep for him, but I think he’s improved a bit going up in trip and I think he will be a good stayer next year. How far he will go I don’t know, but he is a big raw horse, and he has still got lots to learn.
“I don’t know, but I suspect he will maybe have one more run this year if we are lucky. He is not as quick as Baaeed, as I think he wants another mile.
“He is a big raw horse by Nathaniel, but if he can end up half as good as those two that will do me. He is useful. He is going to be at least 105 now so he is going to be (have to be better than a handicapper) as if he isn’t he will be in no man’s land.”
