Bauyrzhan Murzabayev is receiving support from Zac Purton for his participation in the Longines International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC) at Happy Valley on Wednesday night. The Kazakh jockey is eager to seek advice from Joao Moreira in order to perform competitively in the event, as he navigates the course for the first time.
Despite being the US$18 outsider of the 12-strong field of riders, Murzabayev, who has won four jockeys’ premierships in Germany and will represent the country in the IJC, has caught the attention of Purton. The latter believes that the Kazakh king has a very good book of rides and can spring an upset. Purton, however, admits that winning will be a bit difficult for him.
Gorgeous Vitality and Beauty Mission, E Legend, and Solid Impact are the horses that Murzabayev will ride as he chases the HK$600,000 first prize for David Hall, Manfred Man Ka-leung, and Frankie Lor Fu-chuen, respectively.

“It’s my first time visiting Hong Kong, and I like it. I’m happy to be here and riding in the IJC,” Murzabayev said.
“I spoke yesterday with Joao Moreira. He’s a king in Hong Kong. He told me how to ride at Happy Valley, and I’m very lucky to have his advice. Thank you to Joao, and I’ll try my best.
“The best jockey in Hong Kong tipped that I win. It’s very beautiful and gives me confidence.”
Two jockeys who were unable to participate in last year's IJC due to Covid, Yuga Kawada from Japan and Mickael Barzalona from France, are also part of this year's line-up. Along with Murzabayev, they are considered long shots to win the race. Barzalona, who has seen his odds drift from US$11 to US$13, may offer some value with his ride on Quantum Patch for trainer Pierre Ng Pang-chi, who is currently leading the championship.
“I think he’s one of my best chances of the competition, so hopefully, I’ll be able to give him a smooth race and get close,” Barzalona said.
