The Winter Mixed Sale at Ocala Breeders' Sales Company began the central Florida sales season on 23rd January. A short-yearling colt by Mitole was the standout performer, selling for US$95,000 to Calumet Farm and earning top honors. This colt, consigned as Hip 87 by Danielle Loya's Silver Oaks Farm, was featured in the preferred sessions of the sale.
The winning Terrell mare Wild Hickory was the dam of the colt, who was a US$45,000 RNA at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale last year. Wild Hickory is the half-sibling to the multiple graded stakes winner Alert Bay, by City Zip.
Another significant purchase was made by Latinos y mas. They paid US$85,000 for a Charlatan short-yearling filly from the Summerfield draft, which was consigned by Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck as Hip 110. The filly was a Kentucky-bred and was out of Charge of Angles, a half-sibling to the Iowa Derby-placed Winning Number by Speightstown. The filly comes from the family of graded winners like Girolamo, Daydreaming, Accelerator, Bluegrass Cat, Lord of the Game, and Dramedy.
On Day one of the sale, Latinos y mas was also the leading buyer with their purchase of a Practical Joke colt, offered as Hip 80 by Beth Bayer for US$75,000. Love's Equine, agent for Classic Automations, purchased a Yaupon colt named Mighty Yaupon for US$85,000 from Summerfield. Hip 30 was bred in Florida by Dominique Damico and is a half-brother to recent stakes winner Forever Souper.
The highest horse of racing age was an unraced Ohio-bred 3YO filly by Enticed, consigned as Hip 227, and sold for US$70,000 to Emerald Sales, agent for KEM Stables. The filly was dark bay or brown and out of Pyrite Storm. She worked three-eighths in :33 on 22nd Jan during the under tack show and was consigned by Gutierrez Sales.
The sale on Day one saw Beth Bayer selling Rainbows and Roses to FMQ Stables for US$23,000 to be the top broodmare offering. Bayer had sold 22 horses for a US$368,200 gross, making her the leading consignor for the preferred session for Day one. Summerfield led the horses of racing age portion with receipts of US$110,500 for four horses sold.
At the sale, 75 of the 108 horses offered in the preferred session sold for gross receipts of US$1,738,400, representing a 35.5% decline over the 2023 session. The average price fell 14.9% to US$23,179, and a US$16,000 median, down 20%, was recorded.
