Frankie Dettori, the most recognisable face in European racing, has emphatically dismissed any notion of impending retirement. He continues to make waves across the pond, building on his illustrious career that includes remarkable success in the Middle East.
"I should have done this ten years ago," the 53-year-old declared, reflecting on his move to the United States in December 2022.
What began as a grand farewell tour at Santa Anita Park has evolved into a full-fledged American career for the six-time Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner. With a three-year visa in hand, Dettori is now a fixture on the US racing circuit, his sights set firmly on future triumphs.
Dettori's decision to continue riding comes on the back of a stellar career that has seen him dominate some of the world's richest races in the Middle East. His achievements include:
• Four victories in the Gr.1 Dubai World Cup, aboard Dubai Millennium (2000), Moon Ballad (2003), Electrocutionist (2006), and Country Grammer (2022)
• Multiple wins in the Saudi Cup meeting, including the 2023 Gr.3 Neom Turf Cup on Songline
• Numerous successes at the Dubai World Cup Carnival, cementing his status as a go-to jockey for the region's biggest races
After a solid 2023 season with 29 wins and $3.7 million in earnings, 2024 has seen a dramatic upswing. Dettori has already amassed 52 wins from 288 mounts, a 45 per cent increase in rides, with earnings soaring to $6.3 million.
His Gr.1 tally has also grown, with two added to his impressive haul of over 275 top-level victories worldwide.
Dettori's agent, Ron Anderson, is effusive in his praise: "People are realising he's not here on a vacation. He's not looking to retire. Mentally he's as good as we get here. He's a super rider and things are going to get better and better."
The Italian's enthusiasm remains undimmed. After winning three races in a day, Anderson noted, "He sounded like a kid who won his first race. The sky is always blue for him."
While the start at Saratoga has been slower than hoped, with three wins from 28 rides, Dettori remains undaunted.
"I did not have the illusion the other jockeys would roll out the red carpet for me," he said. "Everybody is so ultracompetitive. But when you ride against the best jockeys it brings out the best in you."
As the Saratoga meet winds down, Dettori's schedule remains packed. Kentucky Downs is next, followed by a likely return to New York, with occasional Kentucky trips in preparation for the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar in November.
Beyond that, the search for classic hopefuls continues, with the Kentucky Derby firmly in his sights. And with his track record of success in the Middle East, it wouldn't be surprising to see Dettori make appearances at future Dubai World Cup Carnivals or Saudi Cup meetings.
"I'm doing this with a smile on my face," Dettori concluded. "I'm enjoying it. It's a challenge. Who knows what the future may bring, but I have no regrets. I am really enjoying being here and look forward to continue riding here and around the world."
