In a display of sheer dominance, Kyprios stormed to a four-length victory in the Goodwood Cup last week, reigniting discussions about his potential Arc de Triomphe bid. The Aidan O'Brien-trained six-year-old, hailed for his "very rare" stamina, is now setting his sights on the Irish St Leger at the Curragh next month.
Kyprios's Goodwood performance, rated as his joint second-best by Racing Post Ratings, has trainer O'Brien considering the possibility of ending the horse's season after the Irish Champions Festival. This decision would mirror the strategy employed last year when Kyprios clinched victory in the same Curragh contest.
While Kyprios's prowess is undeniable, Marco Botti remains optimistic about Giavellotto's chances in the upcoming clash. The Newmarket-based Italian trainer, speaking exclusively to the Racing Post, expressed his respect for the dual Gold Cup winner but maintained unwavering faith in his own charge.
"Giavellotto has proven himself over shorter distances, which could be crucial in tackling Kyprios," Botti remarked, referencing the five-year-old's victories in the Yorkshire Cup and Princess of Wales's Stakes. "We're not underestimating the challenge, but we believe we have the right tactics to give Kyprios a real run for his money."
Giavellotto's form earlier this year saw him finish behind Tower Of London in the valuable Red Sea Turf Handicap at Riyadh and the Gr.2 Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan. These Middle Eastern outings have provided valuable experience, with Botti noting, "The international exposure has only sharpened his competitive edge."
Botti, who has enjoyed success in the Middle East with previous runners, is no stranger to preparing horses for Group One targets. His strategic approach to Giavellotto's campaign, focusing on a mix of staying races and middle-distance contests, could prove pivotal in the Irish St Leger showdown.
