City of Troy, the European champion 2YO of 2023 and Epsom Derby hero, is set to stand at Coolmore's home base in Ireland for the 2025 breeding season. The news, revealed by Coolmore on October 12, comes as the colt prepares for his final career start in the Gr.1 Breeders' Cup Classic.
The Aidan O'Brien-trained colt has enjoyed a remarkable career, going unbeaten in his juvenile season with three striking performances. These included a 6 1/2-length rout in the Gr.2 Superlative Stakes and an impressive display in the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes.
Despite Triple Crown dreams being dashed in the Two Thousand Guineas, City of Troy has since secured victories in the Derby, Gr.1 Coral Eclipse Stakes, and Gr.1 Juddmonte International Stakes. These triumphs have established him as the highest-rated performer on turf this year, with an official mark of 127.
Coolmore’s M.V. Magnier expressed his excitement: "As a yearling he was rated the nicest Justify we've bred and even before he won his maiden at the Curragh on Irish Derby weekend, Aidan was enthusing about him like no other before. It's seriously exciting to watch him in his work and in his races. He also seems to have really caught the imagination of the racing public, which is great for the sport."
City of Troy will face stiff competition in the Classic, including Fierceness, Forever Young, and fellow Coolmore-owned 3YO Sierra Leone. The race represents a significant step for the colt, testing his ability on dirt against top-class international competition.
