Bluestocking, the brilliant Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine, has been confirmed to bypass further engagements this year, with connections contemplating her future racing career.
The Ralph Beckett-trained 4YO has enjoyed a phenomenal 2023 campaign, securing her third Group One victory of the season in Europe's most prestigious middle-distance contest at ParisLongchamp. Under a masterful ride from Rossa Ryan, the daughter of Camelot showcased her class, adding to her impressive haul of top-level triumphs.
While speculation had been rife about potential year-end targets, Juddmonte's European racing manager, Barry Mahon, has put those rumours to rest. Speaking about the Arc winner, Mahon stated: "She's in great form. Ralph has said she hasn't stopped eating since she has come home, she's jogging up well and is doing great."
He continued, "Ascot would be off the table as we have Kalpana and Time Lock for Ascot and we will sit down now with the owners and make a plan as to whether she will stay in training or be retired."
The decision to end Bluestocking's 2023 season has sparked discussions about her future. Mahon elaborated:
"I'd say she is done for this year. The owners think she has done enough and were not keen on Del Mar, so we will put her away now and have a discussion and see what we're going to do."
Bluestocking's name is now etched alongside some of the greatest middle-distance performers in racing history. Previous Arc winners include the likes of Enable, who secured the race twice and went on to Breeders' Cup glory, and Treve, another dual winner of the ParisLongchamp showpiece.
As Juddmonte ponders the next move for their star filly, the racing world eagerly awaits news of whether Bluestocking will return to defend her Arc crown in 2024 or bow out at the pinnacle of her career.
Mahon concluded, "It will be the owners' decision, they will decide and either way we will be happy."
With her stellar 2023 performances, Bluestocking has not only elevated her own status but also further cemented Juddmonte's reputation as breeders and owners of world-class thoroughbreds. Whether she graces the turf again or retires to the paddocks, her legacy as an Arc heroine is secure.
