Trawlerman returns to the scene of his greatest triumph, seeking a repeat victory in the Gr.2 British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot on Saturday, 19 October. The John and Thady Gosden-trained gelding is hoping to emulate the likes of Further Flight and Buckskin, who both secured back-to-back wins in this prestigious contest.
The son of Golden Horn demonstrated his staying prowess last year, rallying strongly in the final furlong to pip top-class stayer Kyprios by a neck. The pair finished an impressive 13 lengths clear of this season's Doncaster Cup victor, Sweet William, in third.
Since his Long Distance Cup triumph, Trawlerman has made two appearances on the international stage. He finished a creditable third in the Gr.2 Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan in March, before narrowly missing out on Group One glory at Royal Ascot. The 6YO ran Kyprios to within a length in the Gold Cup, suggesting he retains all his ability.
Thady Gosden, speaking about Trawlerman's chances, said: "Trawlerman ran a great race in the Gold Cup and has enjoyed a nice break since. He won this race last year and heading back has been the plan for quite some time. He likes Ascot and should enjoy conditions again."
The British Champions Long Distance Cup has a rich history, with former winners including the legendary Yeats and popular stayer Stradivarius. A second victory for Trawlerman would cement his place among the elite stayers of recent years and provide a fitting climax to Champions Day at Ascot.
