Johannes, trained by Tim Yakteen, is being primed for the Gr.1 Pegasus World Cup Turf at Gulfstream Park following his commanding performance in the Gr.2 San Gabriel Stakes at Santa Anita Park.
The talented 4YO son of Nyquist has been enjoying a remarkable campaign, securing five graded-stakes victories from six starts in 2024. His sole defeat came at the hooves of More Than Looks in the Gr.1 Breeders' Cup Mile at Del Mar, where he finished a valiant three-quarters of a length behind.
"He's come out of the race in excellent order," Yakteen reported. "If he continues to do well, we plan on hitting the Pegasus."
The US$202,000 San Gabriel success has bolstered Johannes's impressive earnings to nearly US$970,000 for the year. His victories include a stellar performance in the Gr.1 Shoemaker Mile Stakes at Santa Anita in May, putting him firmly in contention for Champion Turf Male honours.
"His record has one blemish on it where we came up just a little bit short, but he has shown up every single start this year. That is what defines a champion," Yakteen said. "He's been a pleasure to train. He makes us look good. He's obviously a special horse, he's gifted, and a joy to have around."
The California-based colt will remain at home for preparations before shipping to Gulfstream. A strong showing in the Pegasus could pave the way for an ambitious tilt at the US$5 million Dubai Turf at Meydan on Dubai World Cup night.
"We'll probably give him a breather after the Pegasus," Yakteen added. "We have to take it one race at a time, but the Dubai Turf would be a possibility. There would be plenty of spacing for us from Jan. 25-April 5."
The ultimate goal remains the 2025 Breeders' Cup, where connections hope to reverse this year's narrow defeat.
