Beau Liam's bay colt has equalled the OBS track record for a quarter-mile, clocking :20 1/5 during the fifth and final under tack session at the Ocala Breeders' Sales June 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age Sale.
The performance caps a remarkable week for consignor Omar Ramirez, whose 28-horse consignment has been producing standout results throughout the sale preparations.
Hip 829, the Beau Liam colt from Airdrie Stud's first-crop sire, becomes the first horse to achieve the :20 1/5 mark at OBS since two entrants recorded that time at the 2024 OBS Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. Notably, one of those previous record holders was Cash Call, who went on to win the Gr.3 Summertime Oaks .
Ramirez had already witnessed success earlier in the week when Hip 229, a filly by Cloud Computing, tied for the bullet move with her quarter-mile breeze in :20 4/5.
"I told Jimbo Gladwell of Top Line Sales this morning 'I've got a good one coming out,'" Ramirez laughed. "I was expecting :20 and 3, :20 and 4 and if I was really lucky, :20 and 2. But :20 and 1, that's amazing. He's just a great colt. I knew the work was going to be good. I knew he was going to be the bullet, whatever the bullet was today."
Bred in Kentucky by La Ciega, the record-equalling colt is out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Sweetnsour Kitty, connecting him to the female family of graded stakes winner and multiple Group One-placed Feverish. The breeding adds substance to his impressive track performance.
Ramirez believes this consignment may represent his finest yet, with the trainer expressing confidence in the quality throughout his draft.
"One of my riders told me to send this horse a quarter because he keeps going, he's not going to stop. He's ready to run," Ramirez added.
Blue Sapphire Stables consigned Hip 788, a grey or roan filly by Vino Rosso, who worked in :20 4/5. The filly is out of the winning Unbridled's Song mare Spoken and traces to the female family of Group One winner and graded stakes producer Preach, dam of sire Pulpit.
Two horses shared the fastest eighth-mile time of :09 4/5. Hip 754, a bay filly by Spendthrift freshman Yaupon consigned by Golden Rock Thoroughbreds, is out of the winning, stakes-placed Aldebaran mare Shine Softly. Her pedigree connects to the female family of 1999 champion turf female Soaring Softly and she is a half-sister to stakes winner The Grass Is Blue.
Hip 831, a dark bay or brown filly by Pleasant Acres Stallions' first-crop sire Leinster consigned by S G V Thoroughbreds, worked the same time. She is out of the winning Concord Point mare Sweetsweetsweet, who is a half-sister to stakes winner Concealedwithakiss.
Meanwhile, Hip 158, Khon Han, added to the week's success stories by winning via disqualification after crossing the wire second by a nose in the sixth race at Gulfstream Park. Consigned by A B Thoroughbreds, the colt is by Spendthrift Farm freshman sire Rock Your World and is out of the winning, stakes-placed Bellamy Road mare Bella Alicita.
The OBS June sale takes place with sessions beginning at 10am ET each day.
