South Australian horseman Dan Clarken and co-trainer, partner Oops Macgillivray, were heading home after Harleymoven’s SA Derby run when they received a life-changing phone call.
“We were driving home up Cross Road after the Derby, and JD Hayes rang, and he asked if we were interested in selling that horse,” Clarken reported to Racing.com.
The slight disappointment of Harleymoven’s unplaced finish in the Derby quickly dissipated, with a million dollar offer from Hong Kong coming for the emerging South Australian three-year-old.
It was ultimately a no-brainer for connections to sell, according to Clarken, with the forward planning of Harleymoven’s career in Australia already causing headaches.
“Where his rating is at the moment once they get him to Hong Kong, it gives them quite a big range of what they can do.
“This is the first little taste of Hong Kong, hopefully it’s not the last.”
Clarken is no stranger to having quality horses depart his stable - having previously seen Gr.1 winner Miracles Of Life head to the Snowden’s yard, and more recently Mileva to Phillip Stokes, but says Harleymoven’s departure is for the best.
Harleymoven has won four of his 11 career starts and earnt over AS$200,000 in prize money.
