Superb Boy went into the Class 3 Peninsula Golden Jubilee Challenge Cup Handicap over 1000m at Sha Tin with his stables hopes of success.
The 4YO Nicconi gelding was looking to build on his career and make it four wins from eight starts when he stepped out after a five-week break between starts.
Trainer Lui was optimistic about Superb Boy’s chances pre-race.
“He’s kept improving, he’s a lovely horse. He’s moving well,” Lui told the media.
With Zac Purton on board, it only raised his ability with the hoop closing in on his 400th start at the track, 68 of those when partnered with the trainer.
However, as the gates crashed back Purton missed the jump on his mount falling towards the back of the field.
In the straight, however, Purton did what he does best and ask the question from his ride passing horses to put himself in a better position although finishing fifth in the end.
He will look to improve and if that run is anything to go by he is sure to.
Trainer Francis Lui has started the season strong and is planning to deliver a raid on the Longines Hong Kong Mile Group One on December 11 with Golden Sixty, back to defend his title in the race.
Golden Sixty is the seven-year-old Medaglia D’Oro-Gaudeamus gelding who has won 22 from 25 starts and taken $20.7 million in race earnings so far.
He is an elite champion who won the Group 2 Bochk Private Wealth Mile last month after victories in seven Group Ones and a further seven Group company races.
Lui currently sits third on the Hong Kong trainers’ championship ladder with 17 wins behind Frankie Lor (20 wins) and Tony Cruz (19).
“He is healthy, happy and is character is just the same. You can see every time, he just wants to pass a horse in front of him,” he said on his equine champion.
“To me, I think he is a special horse.”
