One of the contenders for the prestigious People's Choice Award at the HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Horseracing Excellence Awards is a veteran Dutch jockey who was once the British Champion Apprentice. The award, which will be presented during the Super Saturday event on 2nd March 2024 at Meydan Racecourse, recognizes outstanding contributions to racing both in the UAE and internationally. The People's Choice Award winner is chosen solely by public vote.
In 2023, the award was won by Baaeed, a multiple Group One winner owned by Shadwell. Past winners include famous racehorses such as the Australian legend Winx, and human stars such as the British jockey Hollie Doyle and the American Champion Female Turf Horse of 2017, Lady Eli.
The 2024 People's Choice Award has four nominees, one of which is Yutaka Take. He is a renowned figure in Japan, having dominated his sport for almost four decades. With over 5000 wins under his belt, Take has secured four Japan Cups and four Arima Kinens. He has also tasted success in Dubai, claiming the 2001 Dubai Sheema Classic victory on Stay Gold and the 2007 Dubai Duty Free title on Admire Moon.
This veteran Dutch jockey, Adrie De Vries, has been a prominent figure in the UAE's racing scene since the early 1990s. At 54YO, he remains at the top of his game and recently showcased his prowess by steering Salute The Soldier to victory in the Gr.1 Maktoum Challenge held in March.
A young and enthusiastic owner in the UAE racing scene is Hamdan Sultan Al Sabusi. Despite being one of the youngest registered owners, he has achieved immense success through his horse Algiers, who came in second place in the 2023 Dubai World Cup. Hamdan is a frequent presence at racecourses, inspiring other young racegoers with his passion and knowledge of the sport.
Freddy Tylicki, also known as Frederik Tylicki, was a British Champion Apprentice jockey. During his career, he achieved remarkable success by winning races in the UAE and securing two Group one titles in France. Unfortunately, his career was cut short in 2016 due to a serious injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Despite this setback, Tylicki has found success in other aspects of the horse racing industry. He is now a well-known and successful bloodstock agent, jockeys' agent, and media personality.
