Michele Italia, Pisa's emerging training talent, is embarking on his first international venture with stable flagbearer Salah Al Din in Saturday's US$500,000 Saudi International Handicap.
Operating with a select string of nine horses from his Tuscan base, Italia has watched his Time Test gelding develop into a consistent performer. The 6YO's latest triumph over 1600m in late 2024 has opened doors to this prestigious opportunity.
The globetrotting challenger stretched his legs on the turf course on Tuesday under Marco Ghiani, displaying enthusiasm after his quarantine period.
"It was his first day outside after two days in quarantine, so he was a little bit fresh, but everything was OK," Italia noted. "We'll try to do a little bit more later in the week, but Marco said the track was perfect, especially as he was getting used to wearing new shoes."
The partnership between Italia and Sardinian-born Ghiani, forged during their time with Ed Dunlop in Newmarket, adds another layer to this ambitious raid.
"He's from Sardinia and I'm from Sicily, so it's different, but I met him when we were in Newmarket and Marco is like my little brother," Italia revealed.
Speaking with measured optimism, the Sicilian trainer added: "I'm just a young trainer, I've been training in Italy for four years. It's a good experience and a great opportunity, so all the team is very excited. It will be difficult, but we'll do our best."
