Instead of a hit-and-run mission, the Astrologist's connections have chosen a longer preparation in England for Royal Ascot.
Finishing second with bravery in the Al Quoz Sprint during the World Cup night in March, led to the decision of participating in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes and heading directly to the UK, instead of returning to Australia, which was considered the appropriate path.
Princess And Astrologist Debut Disappointments
Despite the Corstens team's concerns about the Astrologist's fitness, the sprinter made his debut in England at the Gr. 2 Duke of York Clipper Stakes (1200m) on May 17. Unfortunately, he was convincingly defeated in the race.
Meanwhile, Highfield Princess, a highly-regarded contender for the Jubilee Stakes and a multiple Gr.1 winner, also made her first appearance of the season at the same race in York. She finished second in the race.
Damian Lane To Ride Astrologist
After his defeat in the Duke of York Clipper Stakes, the Astrologist competed in the Gr.3 John Of Gaunt Stakes at Haydock, this time over 1400m. Despite placing second, it was still below the standard required to win at Royal Ascot. However, due to the inability to trial in England, the Corstens team used these races to build his fitness for the Jubilee Stakes.
Although he is considered an outsider by bookmakers, the Astrologist still has the potential to surprise. His performance in Dubai and his impressive straight-track sprint record in Australia show that he has the ability to compete with the best. He finished ahead of Artorius in the Newmarket Handicap this year and was runner-up in 2022.
Damian Lane, who was in the saddle for his impressive run in Dubai, will be riding the Astrologist at Royal Ascot after a successful stint in Japan.
