Zaaki, trained by Annabel Neasham, has emerged as the frontrunner for the prestigious $1 million Gr.1 Winx Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday. The horse initially opened with TAB at odds of $4.60 but quickly firmed into $4.00 shortly after the final acceptances.
Zaaki's Trial Run At Rosehill
This 9YO Group One winner showcased its potential by triumphing in the Gr.2 Hollindale Stakes over 1800m at the Sunshine Coast in May. However, Zaaki was unable to replicate its 2021 success in the Gr.1 Doomben Cup over 2000m later that month. In preparation for the Winx Stakes, Neasham trialled Zaaki alongside jockey Jamie Kah over 900m at Rosehill last Friday, resulting in a second-place finish behind Shinzo, the 2023 Golden Slipper winner.
Fangirl, trained by Chris Waller, is another notable contender in the Winx Stakes. This 5YO mare, sired by Sebring, claimed victory in the 2022 Gr.1 Vinery Stud Stakes at Newcastle. Initially opening at odds of $4.60, Fangirl's chances slightly diminished as it drifted to $4.80. During the autumn season, Fangirl showcased its consistent performance by securing placements in three different Group races. However, its campaign concluded with a seventh-place finish in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile over 1600m at Randwick in April.
