Over 1400 nominations from 19 countries arrived for the US$30.5 million Dubai World Cup meeting on Saturday, 30th March. The impressive list includes the 2023 winner, Ushba Tesoro, and features a global assembly of top equine names.
A total of 868 horses from 19 countries are nominated across the nine races scheduled at Dubai’s iconic Meydan Racecourse. Japan leads with 200 entries, including Derma Sotogake, the 2023 Gr.2 UAE Derby winner, nominated for the US$12 million Dubai World Cup sponsored by Emirates Airline.
The highly anticipated race may witness a rematch between Derma Sotogake and his Breeders’ Cup Classic rival, White Abarrio, part of the 150-strong contingent from the USA, which also includes Preakness winner National Treasure.
The Longines Dubai Sheema Classic, valued at US$6 million, was among the top five races globally in 2023 and promises to be even more competitive in 2024. Notable nominations include Japanese filly Liberty Island, Irish racing sensation Auguste Rodin, and the 2022 race winner Shahryar. Additionally, British-trained filly Emily UpJohn is a top contender.
The US$5 million Dubai Turf, sponsored by DP World, is a truly international affair. Aiming for a record-breaking fourth win is Lord North, facing strong competition from Arima Kinen winner Do Deuce and Hong Kong's Voyage Bubble. Trainer Charlie Appleby of Godolphin, yet to secure a victory in this race, could find success with Breeders’ Cup Mile champion Master Of The Seas among the nominees.
Defending champions feature prominently, with Sibelius entered to defend the Gr.1 Dubai Golden Shaheen sponsored by Nakheel. The competition includes the 2023 runner-up and 2022 winner Switzerland. Another title defender is Danyah, winner of the 2023 Gr.1 Al Quoz Sprint sponsored by Azizi Developments, possibly facing last year’s runner-up, The Astrologist, and Australian contender Star Patrol.
