After a challenging 2023 season following his victory in the Breeders' Cup Turf in 2022, Rebel's Romance made a stunning comeback. Trainer Charlie Appleby revealed that the gelding had regained his confidence with victories at Kempton Park in England and in Qatar during the winter races, proving his mettle once again.
Under the skilled guidance of jockey William Buick, Rebel's Romance secured an advantageous position in the US$6 million Sheema Classic on Saturday. Tracking closely behind a slow pace, he seized the opportunity to make his move ahead of the competition, ultimately clinching victory by a convincing two lengths over Shahryar in a field packed with talent.
Rebel's Romance faced setbacks during his visits to New York last summer, including a mishap in the Bowling Green at Saratoga and a lackluster performance in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Aqueduct. However, he has since adopted a new strategy, transitioning from his previous closing style to a more proactive stalking approach. Appleby expressed optimism, hinting at a potential return to American turf for the gelding in the upcoming season.
Appleby, alongside his sole client Godolphin, has assembled a formidable team for the upcoming spring meet at Keeneland, commencing this Friday. Among the notable contenders is Master of The Seas, the victor of the Breeders' Cup Mile in November. Also in the mix is Naval Power, who showcased his prowess with a decisive victory in the Singspiel Stakes at Meydan on 23rd February, despite limited appearances since 2022.
Other promising entries include Mischief Magic, winner of the 2022 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, nominated for Saturday's Shakertown, and Dazzling Star, third-place finisher in last year's Natalma at Woodbine, nominated for the Appalachian, also on Saturday. Additionally, Musical Act, who campaigned in Dubai over the winter, is nominated for Friday's Transylvania Stakes.
