Chesspiece, a promising young stayer, made progress by finishing third in the Gr.2 Queen's Vase on his first Pattern-race appearance at Royal Ascot.
Stepping up in class and distance, Chesspiece, a Nathaniel colt trained by Simon and Ed Crisford, led the pack at the start of the race with jockey James Doyle.
However, he soon settled behind the leading duo after the first quarter-mile.
Gregory took the lead and accelerated towards the finish line at the top of the straight, with Chesspiece challenging for second place as they passed the two-furlong pole.
Although Chesspiece was overtaken by Saint George soon after, he rallied and finished the 14-furlong race strongly, losing by just over five lengths.
