The 91 year old owner John Amerman believes that Endlessly, has what it takes to win the Derby. Endlessly's four-length victory in the Gr.3 Jeff Ruby Steaks Stakes at Turfway Park impressed Amerman.
"He's a beautiful horse," said John Amerman shortly before heading to Kentucky. "He can lope along, and then he has a tremendous kick. He doesn't get too upset about things, either. So we'll find out if all those traits make a difference on Saturday."
In the 1999 Gr.1 Matriarch Stakes, New Zealand mare, Happyanunoit, landed the first significant win for John and Jerry Amerman's stable, beginning their love for Thoroughbred racing. They have continued to remain passionate about racing for the past 25 years.
John Amerman served as the CEO and Chairman of Mattel, the company responsible for creating iconic toys like Barbie, Ken, Hot Wheels, Chatty Cathy, and Creepy Crawlers. The son of Oscar Performance was bred at their Peacefield Farm in Southern California and will be racing in the 150th Kentucky Derby.
He has lost only once in the Gr.1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita Park. The focus now is on his performance on the dirt at the Derby as he transitions from all-weather tracks to a difficult dirt track at Churchill Downs. Trainer Michael McCarthy was hesitant to enter Endlessly in the Derby, but a promising workout at Churchill convinced him to take on the challenge.
Amerman Racing, led by Bobby Frankel, had already established itself as a successful business by the time Amerman retired in 1997.
"Bobby Frankel taught me a lot," Amerman said. "He had great wisdom and great results. He told me, 'John, never talk about a horse before a race, because nothing you could say will make any difference.' So let's hope we've got something to talk about after the Derby."
