The upcoming Gr.1 Tokyo Yushun, also known as the Japanese Derby promises a showdown between two unbeaten runners, adding extra excitement to the prestigious event.
Justin Milano, the victor of the first leg of the Japanese Triple Crown in the Gr.1 Satsuki Sho (G1), will face stiff competition from Sixpence, a promising colt trained by Sakae Kunieda for Carrot Club.
Owned by Katsumi Yoshida of Northern Farm, Sixpence boasts an impeccable record, having emerged victorious in all three of his starts. The colt, sired by Kizuna, is the offspring of Finley'sluckycharm, a five-time graded stakes winner renowned for her triumph in the 2018 Gr.1 Madison Stakes.
Skipping the Satsuki Sho, Sixpence has been meticulously trained for the Tokyo Yushun, aiming to continue his winning streak.
Notably, Christophe Lemaire, who piloted Sixpence to victory in his maiden and Spring Stakes triumphs, will ride Regaleira in the Derby, leaving Yuga Kawada to take the reins of Sixpence.
For trainer Sakae Kunieda, a seasoned figure with over 1,000 wins, including 22 Group One victories at the Japan Racing Association, the Japanese Derby represents a coveted prize that has eluded him thus far. With retirement looming due to the JRA's age-limit system in 2026, the 2024 edition of the Derby marks Kunieda's penultimate opportunity to clinch this prestigious title.
As anticipation mounts and the stage is set for a thrilling showdown, racing enthusiasts eagerly await the clash between Justin Milano and the undefeated Sixpence, poised to deliver an unforgettable spectacle at Tokyo Racecourse.
