As of the year 2022, the Caulfield Cup has been won by Durston for the first time in racing history. Despite entering the race late, the Chris -Waller-trained runner made a remarkable performance, passing the second-placed Gold Trip, Knights Order and Montefilia. By taking home the Caulfield Cup, Durston makes history as the first ever emergency to do so. Durston wagered $18 to enter the competition. Mark Zahra's Gold Trip appeared to win the race until the last strides, when Durston passed them.
“What an amazing win in the Caulfield Cup, it’s a big deal,” Waller said after the victory.
Smokin' Romans, ridden by prerace favourite Jamie Kah, was caught in a bottleneck as they rounded the last curve and tried to get back inside. However, the damage had already been done by the time they found a clear path, and the strangers had already begun to withdraw. From above, it was evident how ridiculous the winning run was for Durston, as Michael Dee had to dodge the other horses to get a breath of fresh air.
