The 2022 Breeders' Cup Classic was easily won by Flightline, a 4YO colt, on Saturday. This was Flightline's sixth victory in six starts. Saturday's race was won by the 2/5 favourite, who helped set the pace throughout the race and pulled away from his closest rival, Life Is Good, in the final stages of the race. First place went to Flightline, who beat out Olympiad by eight lengths. In third place was Taiba. As a result of riding Flightline to victory, jockey Flavien Prat now has four Breeders' Cup victories to his name, and trainer John Sadler now has two. Even though Accelerate won the Breeders' Cup Classic for Sadler in 2018, he spoke more highly of Flightline than any of his other horses.
"This is one of the great horses of all time," Sadler told NBC Sports. "I think history will show that."
Only Life Is Good kept up with Flightline's pace, and then faded in the final stages, solidifying the latter's status as a once-in-a-generation performer. Having previously won the Malibu Stakes, the Metropolitan Handicap, and the Pacific Classic Stakes before this coming Saturday, Flightline has been compared to some of the all-time greats, including the previously peerless Secretariat. It is unclear if Flightline will continue racing beyond this year. Prat, who rode Flightline to victory on Saturday, was understandably elated by the horse's growing reputation and remarked as much after the race.
