Champion sire Frankel's progeny made quite an impact Down Under on Saturday, when his winner at Ballarat easily bested the odds-on favourite Detonator Jack.
Green Fly, trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, was making his second start in Australia after finishing sixth in his debut at Flemington on November 5.
He finished five lengths behind the winner, Detonator Jack. He reversed the odds and defeated his opponent by a half-length in the last strides of the Benchmark 84 race, which he won under Ben Melham's guidance. Green Fly was sourced privately for Australia by OTI Racing.
He was formerly trained in France by Jean-Claud Rouget and showed early promise, earning stakes placement after two wins and three placings in eight career races. A 280,000 Euro buy from Arqana as a yearling, Green Fly is the first winner out of the stakes-winning Pivotal mare Via Pisa, a half-sister to the champion Japanese 2YO Colt Admire Mars (Jpn), who is in his second season at Arrowfield Stud.
The Green Fly family is descended from the immensely productive Frankel x Pivotal nick, which has produced seven stakes-winners, including five Group I winners, from 27 starters, for a stakes-winner to starter ratio of an astounding 26%.
