Matthew Chadwick, a rider from Hong Kong, will be taking part in the Shergar Cup jockey challenge at Ascot on Saturday, August 12th.
This opportunity arose after an unfortunate incident prevented the leading local jockey from participating. Chadwick will be joining Joao Moreira, a favorite from Hong Kong, and Kazuo Yokoyama from Japan to represent the Rest of The World team.
This unique competition also includes teams from Great Britain and Ireland, Europe, and an all-female lineup known as the Ladies. Originally, Vincent Ho was supposed to captain the Rest of the World team, but due to an injury sustained in a recent fall in Japan, Chadwick stepped in to make his second appearance in the Shergar Cup.
“It’s unfortunate what happened to Vincent and I know it can be very hard to have a fall and then get back again,” said Chadwick. “But on a personal level I’m very happy to be able to step in for him and hopefully we’ll get some good results.”
Silver Saddle winner strikes again
Chadwick had an incredibly successful previous trip to Ascot. Not only did he secure a win, but he also achieved three second-place finishes. As a result, he emerged as the leading rider and was awarded the prestigious Silver Saddle. Additionally, his outstanding performance contributed a remarkable 45 points towards the Rest of The World's overall victory.
“It looks like they’ve assembled some world-class jockeys and some very good local riders, and it’s always a good event to be a part of,” said 33-year-old Chadwick. “I had some nice results there in 2012 and hopefully the draw has been kind to me again.”
Chadwick had yet another successful season in Hong Kong in 2022/23, achieving 43 victories and securing the seventh spot in the jockey's standings. His impressive performance also resulted in earnings surpassing HK$68 million.
The Shergar Cup is a competition that takes place throughout a six-race card, where each participating jockey rides in five of the races. In each leg of the competition, the top five jockeys to cross the finish line are awarded points. The winner receives 15 points, followed by ten points for second place, seven points for third place, five points for fourth place, and three points for fifth place.
