El Kodigo, South America's top-rated dirt performer, is facing his sternest examination as preparations intensify for the Gr.1 Saudi Cup at King Abdulaziz Racecourse.
The Argentinian star, now owned by Muhaideb Abdullah Almuhaideb, is bringing formidable credentials to the February 22 contest, including multiple Group One victories on home soil.
The powerful owner is mounting a three-pronged attack on the world's richest race, having also acquired El Kodigo's compatriot Intense For Me, alongside recent UK Cup victor Defunded.
Regular pilot Gustavo Calvente is exuding confidence about his mount's prospects. "El Kodigo is the best horse I've ever ridden," he declared. "No one expected a few days ago that he would be running in such an important race, but here we are – getting ready for the challenge. He's full of class and I trust he'll overcome any obstacles."
The 4YO's preparation has centred around staying events, including a triumph in the Ramírez over 2400m in Uruguay. His juvenile success in the Gr.1 Polla de Potrillos over 1600m offers hope for the shorter trip.
The presence of Laurel River should ensure a genuine gallop, vital for El Kodigo's chances. His recent encounter with Intense For Me in the Gr.1 Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini resulted in a narrow defeat.
Calvente, who previously visited Saudi Arabia with Miriñaque in the 2021 Red Sea Turf Handicap, believes the surface will suit his mount. "The track there is ideal for El Kodigo—a bit deeper than ours but with good grip. It's more like Maroñas than Palermo, and he's excelled on both."
Making history as the first Argentine challengers in the race's history, both El Kodigo and Intense For Me are carrying their nation's hopes. Japanese contender Forever Young has been identified as a significant threat in what promises to be a truly international clash.
