The Gr.1 Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) is shaping up as an intriguing clash of international talent, with representatives from Japan and Australia taking on Hong Kong's rising star Ka Ying Rising, who enters the race on a remarkable seven-race winning streak.
Japan's Satono Reve, trained by the accomplished Noriyuki Hori, brings formidable connections to the race. Hori's impressive record in Hong Kong includes five Group One victories, with notable successes through Maurice (Hong Kong Mile and Champions Mile), Satono Crown (Hong Kong Vase), and Neorealism (QEII Cup).
Recommendation, trained by first-time HKIR participant Ciaron Maher, caused momentary concern when dumping track rider Anna Weatherlake during Wednesday morning trackwork. The incident proved minor, with the three-time Group Three winner completing his preparation without issue after being caught.
Carrot Farm, representing Satono Reve's connections, emphasised the careful approach to their charge's first overseas venture: "Because of the two-time environment changes for the departure quarantine and the trip to Hong Kong, the horse's condition is being carefully monitored. We have been informed that he has done almost what he needs to prior to his trip to Hong Kong."
Maher, meanwhile, remains unfazed by his runner's pre-race antics: "He popped the rider off before work, but I don't think it made much difference to him. He didn't need to break any records – he was just out to stretch his legs."
The Hong Kong Sprint has a rich history of producing champions, with previous winners including the legendary Silent Witness, who captured the race in 2003 and 2004, before going on to establish himself as one of the world's premier sprinters. Mr Stunning achieved back-to-back victories in 2017 and 2018, while Wellington claimed the prize in 2021 and 2022.
Jockey Mark Zahra, who partners Recommendation, acknowledges the challenge ahead, particularly from Ka Ying Rising, while Maher expresses enthusiasm about his first Hong Kong experience:
"The hospitality's been unbelievable and the facilities are great. This is our first runner here, but we'd be keen to bring more horses to this meeting."
